When World War II began, Aubrey joined the Army in January, 1942. He was assigned to the 70th Tank Battalion as a medic, where he served under General Patton in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was then transferred to England to train for the invasion of Normandy. He went ashore on Omaha Beach, then stayed in the European theatre where he was awarded several medals, including the Bronze Star, during the Battle of the Bulge.

Following his retirement from the practice of law, Aubrey and Charlet moved to San Angelo in 1994. Aubrey continued to serve his community by volunteering with the San Angelo Community Hospital Auxiliary, and Meals for the Elderly. He was also a member of Southland Baptist Church.
