Daniel P. Murphy, 88, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on March 21, 2014. Dan was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 10, 1926 to Vincent and Margaret Murphy. The family later moved to Auburn, Illinois where his father started a large rug and furniture cleaning business in Springfield, Illinois in 1937. Dan graduated from Auburn High School in 1944. While in school, he organized and led a tumbling class which performed for groups in the area. He was also a member of the Springfield Rowing Club and rode stroke for the team which was invited to try out for the Olympics. However, they were beat out by the team from Quincy, Illinois. Duck...
Daniel P. Murphy, 88, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away on March 21, 2014. Dan was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 10, 1926 to Vincent and Margaret Murphy. The family later moved to Auburn, Illinois where his father started a large rug and furniture cleaning business in Springfield, Illinois in 1937. Dan graduated from Auburn High School in 1944. While in school, he organized and led a tumbling class which performed for groups in the area. He was also a member of the Springfield Rowing Club and rode stroke for the team which was invited to try out for the Olympics. However, they were beat out by the team from Quincy, Illinois. Duck hunting with his dog Sandy on cold winter mornings was also a passion of his. During the Korean War in 1952, he served as Reconnaissance and Intelligence Platoon Sergeant. He worked in the family business for many years. He and his wife Joanna then moved to Arizona. He worked various jobs until he found his real interest and vocation – real estate. He became a broker and founded and owned University Realty in Tempe, Arizona until he retired in 1991. He belonged to the National Association of Realtors and served on the Grievance Committee and the Professional Standards Committee. He was always a motorcycle enthusiast and he and his nephew Larry Murphy rode in the Three Flags Classic from Tijuana, Mexico to Victoria, British Columbia, on their motorcycles. He was a life member of Gold Wing Road Riders, Chapter D in Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded by his parents, Vincent and Margaret Murphy, his wife Joanna Mussa Murphy, two brothers Joe Murphy of Springfield, Illinois, and Peter Murphy of Scottsdale, Arizona. He is survived by his sister Pat Fritchman of Mesa, Arizona, and his longtime close friend, Dolly Bollero of Decatur, Illinois, as well as several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, it is requested donations be sent to . Memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Green Acres Chapel of Light, 401 N Hayden Rd, Scottsdale, Arizona, 85257. He will be sorely missed by all his family, friends, neighbors and everyone who knew him.
