During his three years as a commissioned U.S. Naval Officer, he served at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station (NUWES, now NUWC) in Keyport, WA. At this time, Dan joined the Civil Service at NUWES and later retired as Head of Production Planning after 30 years of service.
During the same period, Dan also served as Executive Officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Eighteen. He was very proud the Battalion was recognized with the prestigious Rear Admiral John R. Dan was very active in many community volunteer efforts. Working with the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bremerton he started Project HELP, which provides people in the community with a free day of home maintenance, including plumbing and electrical repairs. Dan started a furniture manufacturing operation to help generate income for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Bremerton. In 2000, he joined Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County, WA, where he became a Project Director, building homes locally and abroad for families in need.
Dan was an active member of Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in Bremerton for more than 55 years. His parish activities included choral singing, Eucharistic Minister, work on multiple boards, helping with construction of the new school gymnasium and the education of his seven children.
Dan especially enjoyed skiing, running, sailing, handball, cycling and the Seahawks. His many hobbies included woodworking; choral singing at Puget Sound Stage in Bremerton where he performed in The Mikado and with the Kitsap choral group, The Puget Soundsters. His favorite songs were from the 1965 musical The Sound of Music.
More than anything, Dan was most proud of "raising seven children to be responsible citizens with my wife, Judy." Dan will be missed by the many people whose lives he touched.

We appreciate all Dan gave throughout the 30 years of knowing him and Judy, and wanted you to know how much we will treasure the coffee table be repaired for us last Summer. Then for two years he has brought Jesus to our home with such love and no judgement of our humble abode. Truly the world needs more people of faith such as the two of you always have shown and the light in your children and grandchildren will forever show the light from his love. We were at the service but unable to attend the reception or burial but wanted to assure you of our prayers and love as you go forward. Love in Jesus, Michael and Glenda Isbell

I worked with Dan at Habitat for almost 20 years. He was dedicated and enthusiastic and much more skilled and effective than I. But he always had a twinkle in his eye and voice which made working with him an enjoyable experience. He was 6 months younger than I, but we had an ongoing friendly competition regarding who was the oldest volunteer. Unfortunately, now he will never catch up. I will miss him as will many people. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Judy, Greg and family. I just heard of Dan's passing. Please accept my deepest condolences. We had some great times together. I will always remember his easy, pleasant manner. He did some wonderful things for our Scout troop in the 60s and 70s. I remember his leadership in getting us started with Christmas tree sales and his leadership in founding our troop's Leadership Corps. I want to also remember our Mt. Rainier climb in 1974 via Gibralter Ledge. He was fun to be around.

I am flooded with memories of playing at the Papineau's house . The sorrow and joy I feel right now is only a reminder of how good my life has been. I went to Our Lady Star of the Sea school with Kim and would often walk from my house to hers to play and was usually greeted by Dan's warm hello. It was home away from home. I felt that the parents of all my classmates were like second parents to me and that is rare find. No matter if I saw them only once in a blue moon I still feel that special connection to this day. I loved every minute of my time being at the Papineau's and I am very thankful to God for surrounding me with families like Dan and Judy's. My heartfelt condolences to you Judy, and to all your family. I will see you at the service for sure. All my love, Andrea Garcia
