Daniel Waldbillig Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 19, 2017.

Daniel Waldbillig passed away unexpectedly on December 14th 2017 while at Harrison Hospital awaiting a procedure. Dan was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. Dan is survived by his wife of over 49 years, Ursula Waldbillig, his children Tammy Gal and Michael Waldbillig both of Bremerton. His grandchildren, Lillian Conklin of Utah, Madeline and Carolyn Harstad of Bremerton and Isaiah West of Oregon. Brothers, Francis (Peggy) Waldbillig of Gresham Oregon, Bernard (Susie) Waldbillig of Port Orchard, and Norbert (Michelle) Waldbillig of Bend Oregon. His sisters, Yvonne (Glen) Lutz of Seattle and Loretta Dufour of Silverdale. Many cousins, nieces and nephew and extended family throughout Washington, Oregon, Montana and Minnesota. Dan was born to Loretta and Francis Waldbillig in 1947 in Minnesota. Later he moved with his family to Bremerton, WA and then to a Christmas Tree farm in Silverdale, WA now known as Loretta Heights. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School and joined the Army. While stationed in Frankfurt Germany, he met and fell in love with a beautiful young German girl who he married in 1968. They had two children before moving back to Bremerton into the house he lived as a child. He went to work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a Pipefitter in 1971 after leaving the service. Dan made many friends while working at PSNS, most of them fishing buddies. Dan was active in Star of the Sea Catholic Church and was president of the Waldbillig Scholarship Foundation for Catholic education. Dan moved his family out to Seabeck in 1991. He retired from PSNS in 2002 as an Assistant Project Superintendent to spend more time at home help raising his granddaughter Lilly that they had recently gained custody of and to be daycare of his new granddaughter Madeline Harstad. Dan lived for his grandchildren. He gave them everything they ever wanted or could ask for. His house was the place for kids to hang out. All the grandkids, cousins, nieces and nephews and anyone who had kids looked forward to Easter at Dan and Ursula's. They spent weeks preparing the 22 acres for the hundreds of Easter Eggs they were going to hide and you could even find stuffed rabbits in the woods! Dan had many hobbies that kept him busy in retirement besides his grandchildren. He had several rental houses that they made Oxford houses. These were for women who were struggling with addiction and working towards recovery. He spent a considerable amount of time visiting with the houses to make sure everything was in working order and doing many renovations that they did themselves. Dan and Ursula just installed a whole new kitchen in one of the homes in early 2017. Dan was also there to help his children work on their own homes. Renovating his Son's bathroom and helping reside his daughter's home. One of Dan's most favorite hobbies was measuring horns for Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young. He became an "Official Measurer" for both and would travel to sportsman shows with Dave Morris of Northwest Big Game Inc. to measure deer, elk, sheep, bear, cougar, moose, whatever people brought him. He would travel practically anywhere to measure or do a DNA test for free because he just loved to help people. Dan loved to hunt and fish and do anything outdoors. He found his new hunting buddy, his granddaughter, Madeline. He took her to get her hunters education training and then they were off. Turkey hunting in Eastern Washington, deer in Spokane and then to Dave's in Ritter Oregon where Madeline and grandpa got their Elk on the same day in 2015. Dan talked about that hunting trip for months! Dan was eager to take his youngest granddaughter, Carrie out hunting soon. Dan also loved to take his family out fishing for Halibut, Cod and Salmon with his most recent trip for Halibut with his baby sister Lori. Dan had started a new hobby a couple years ago with his daughter Tammy, wine making! While hunting elk in Ritter with her and Madeline last year, they discovered Elderberries since the elk were doing a good job at hiding from them. They ended up with so many Elderberries that year (no elk) that they were running out of things to do with them. Tammy remembered that her Dad made Dandelion Wine when she was a kid so suggested that they try it again. It was such a success that they started making wine from all kinds of fruit. Before long he and Tammy had carboys all over the place with fermenting wine and they had gotten his sister Lori to join the fun! Family functions had become more of wine tasting parties, sampling what each of us had brewed up. Dan kept his retirement days very busy, too busy most days. Madeline had recently moved more toward her music and grandpa never missed a performance! Dan loved music and loved to watch his granddaughter play music. He would travel from a sportsman show in Oregon or hunting in Spokane to watch her and then back again. We can't forget how much Dan and Ursula liked to travel either. Taking the grandchildren to Condo's all over the place. Everyone's favorite was Seaside, where they went every summer. Walks on the beach during the day and bonfires at night. This summer Dan and Ursula went to Banff Canada with daughter Tammy and her boyfriend Terry and granddaughters Madeline and Carrie. Hiking and rafting were some of the activities. Dan found a shop that had large game mounted all over and spent time talking to the owner about the animals, teaching her about the horns, how to count the points, and how to tell the age of the animals. She was very thankful and asked him to come back someday when he had more time to measure the animals. Dan touched so many lives and had so much more he wanted to do. He loved unconditionally his entire family and was always there to help. He loved his country and if you knew Dan that meant he loved the second amendment:) Our hearts are broken and will never be healed completely by his loss. Please come join us in celebrating Dan's life on January 19th at 11:00 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Bremerton, WA.

I worked with Dan for about three years prior to my retirement from PSNS in 2002. He was always positive, easy to work with and a hard worker. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to get to know him.

Dan and I served on the education committee for Star of the Sea School. Our kids attended Star of the Sea together. He has passed away way too soon. Many prayers and blessings and much comfort to Ursula, Tammy, Michael and all the extended Waldbillig family. I am so glad I had the opportunity to know Ursula, Dan, Tammy and Michael all those years ago. Dan will always be remembered.

I had the extreme pleasure of meeting Dan only one time. But that short visit was a memorable one. He was working hard making fresh apple juice with a manual juicer he had. Since then, I haven't been able to drink apple juice since because none of it could match up. I also got to spend time with his wonderful family during the holiday and I could tell that he loved them with every ounce of his being. With the short amount of time that I got to spend with Dan, I could see that he was one of great integrity and respect.
I value my time with him and mourn the loss of great man. His memory is a beacon for what we should all strive to be. Id like to extend my gratitude to his entire family and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.
