WATERVILLE – Darrell Keith Sheive, 70, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, November 16th, 2012. He was born in Waterville, Maine on October 21st, 1942, the second of nine children to Albert X. and June (Brown) Sheive. He was educated in the Clinton and Fairfield schools, graduating from Lawrence High School in June of 1961. While a student, he played basketball and maintained a lifelong love of sports. In 1961, he married Patricia Lessard and together they raised a son and two daughters.
His very first employer was his uncle Arthur at the family farm; he went on to Bath Iron Works for several years, then to Keyes Fibre Company (now known as Huhtamaki) for twenty plus years, and eventually sold Prudential Insurance. He was a basketball referee while his children were growing up; he also enjoyed sailing and construction, having designed and built his own beautiful home and did much refinishing and renovation on Memere's camp which he so loved. He was a well-respected mechanic and had a terrific mathematical mind. As a son, he truly cherished his mother, overseeing her interests and treasuring time spent with her; as a family man and Dad, his children were his absolute priority and the source of great joy and pride. He was hardworking and generous with all of his dealings and was a truly honorable man who also enjoyed financial investing and many happy hours with his favorite collections.
In 2003, he married Gail K. Givens and they spent the remainder of his life together in a truly joyful and blessed partnership.
He is survived by his wife Gail Kathleen Sheive; a son, Greg Sheive and companion Diane of York; two daughters, Laurie Goodenow and husband Don of New Gloucester, Jill Conover of Scarborough, his mother, June Sheive, five sisters, Diane Sheive of Skowhegan, Karen Salter and husband Doug of Maryland, Doreen Sheive of Augusta, Nancy Jean and husband Spurgeon Stevens of Fairfield, Natalie Bigelow of Oakland; two brothers, Cedric Sheive of Kansas and Richard and wife Kathy Sheive of Waterville, and his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
He was predeceased by a sister Cynthia Gurney.
Memorial visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., November 21st followed immediately by a Memorial Service at 3 p.m. at Veilleux Funeral Home, Waterville. Private burial will be at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Fairfield Interfaith Food Pantry.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Veilleux Funeral Home 8 Elm St. Waterville, ME 04901. 872-7676. www.veilleuxfuneralhome.com
