David Allan Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 25, 2013.

SMITH, David Allan (Al) 1924 – 2013 – Died peacefully in the early morning hours on Monday, November 25, 2013 at the Extendicare Mapleview. He was a Second World War Veteran. Beloved husband of Joan. Predeceased by his sister-in-law Gwen Brighty. Caring father of Pat, Garr (Mary) and Wendy Piper (Jeff). "Pop" to Stephen Smith (Lorraine), Marnie (fiance Andy), Mitch and Bren Piper. Great grandfather of Spencer Smith. "Uncle Smit" to John Brighty (Lori Johnson), Sue Brown (Doug) and Kevin Brighty. For many years he was a dedicated member of Kiwanis, holding several positions including Lieutenant Governor. In recent years, he enjoyed the fellowship of his former Kiwanians at their regular Tuesday lunches at Reggies. He was very proud of the fact that he was a Kiwanian as well as a honourary Rotarian. He was a long time Rotary judge at the Community Day Parade and he was heavily involved in the Musical Comedy Guild designing and constructing sets. He had a fascination with magic and performed at numerous shows. Family are inviting Al's friends and former colleagues to celebrate his life at a visitation at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Thursday, November 28, 2013 from 11:00 am until 12:30 pm. Memorial service in the chapel at 1:00 pm. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society, the Salvation Army or charity of your choice would be appreciated. Dear Pat and Family,
I was having my occasional look at the Sault Star, when I noticed your Dad's photo - just like my memories of him in the mid to late 1960's! My deepest sympathy to you, your Mom, Garr and Wendy. You were fortunate to have him in your life for 60+ years. But it is never easy to lose a parent... no matter what the age. May you cherish your memories!

Dear Pat and the Smith clan,
While I only had the pleasure of meeting your Dad just once a few summers ago at "Camp Waka Waka Smith," you spoke of him so often over the years, and shared some wonderful stories. Please know that you are not alone in remembering a wonderful person that obviously meant so much to so many.

Joan , I would like to express my sincerest condolences to you and your family. Bev reminded me of Al doing his magic trick with Phyllis in front of the ESL students at school. I'm sure these sort of memories will help to carry you through this difficult time. Al certainly earned a spot in our hearts.

Joan and Family: I am so saddened by the passing of a great man and one of my greatest mentors. He always had a smile on his face when I entered the room and provided much needed guidance to me in my Kiwanis "career". Both you and I were blessed to have such a man in our lives. Jack Falkins

Dear Joan and family - our deepest sympathies to all of you. We share your loss as we remember the Al we knew - the consumate businessman; the wonderful and caring friend with an amazing sense of humour; the husband, father and grandfather so proud of his family and their accomplishments; Mr. Kiwanis as we thought of him and the fun he had with his green convertible riding in many parades; "Magic Al" entertaining children and adults alike with his tricks and slight of hand. Al was one of the first friends Lloyd made when he moved to the Sault and that friendship remains especially valued all these 40 years later. Please know that our thoughts are with all the family and friends who will celebrate the life of a very special man. Wish we could be there in person but family committments prevent us from making the trip. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To have even ONE person,(who is not related,by blood or marriage),shed tears of heartfelt sorrow,it is said,"you've lived a blessed life of friendships"!
Al's passing ,undoubtedly has many, many friends, who have opened a flood gate of tears, while reflecting on when , and how we've known him.Al embraced me as a fellow Kiwanian 43 years ago.His guidance ,and counsel was always truly welcomed.
Al gave readily and enthusiastically, his time and knowledge,to his fellow Kiwanians. He was ,in our eyes, the historian, the purveyor of Kiwanis protocol, our very conscience, keeping us focused on the objects of Kiwanis.
To Joan, and family...accept our sincere condolences.....and thank you so much, for sharing his life with us ,over so many years.
