TUSCALOOSA | David Wayne Childress, age 72, died December 25, 2013, at Hospice of West Alabama. A Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 29, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa with Dr. Charlie Durham officiating and Heritage Chapel Funeral Home & Cremations, a Dignity Memorial Provider, directing. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Born December 11, 1941 in Empire, Alabama to Eugene and Marie Childress, Wayne received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Alabama. He served in the US Air force as a JAG officer and went on to practice law in Mobile, Ala....

Born December 11, 1941 in Empire, Alabama to Eugene and Marie Childress, Wayne received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Alabama. He served in the US Air force as a JAG officer and went on to practice law in Mobile, Ala. In 1980, he moved to Tuscaloosa to work as a Trust Officer for First National Bank. Upon his retirement from AmSouth Bank in 2002, Wayne became Of Counsel to the law firm of Rosen and Harwood. In 2013, he was recognized as a Pillar of the Bar by the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association.Distinguished by his unwavering willingness to serve others at every stage of his life, Wayne acted as Treasurer and President of the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club and earned recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow. He also chaired the committee responsible for erecting the clock on the courthouse square in honor of the Rotary International Centennial. He fulfilled two terms as President of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Board and as Chairman of the Symphony Endowment Board. A Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, Wayne sat on the Endowment Committee for many years.He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosemarie Childress; daughter, Rebecca Knockemus of Dallas, Texas; brothers, Ray Childress (Helen) of West Point, Miss. and Paul Childress (Diane) of Pontotoc, Miss.; and a number of nieces and nephews.Honorary Pallbearers are staff and volunteers at the Hospice of West Alabama and members of the Tuscaloosa Rotary Club.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Tuscaloosa, Ala. or to the Children of Samar Philippines c/o Friendship Circle of Kendall, Renee Greenstein, 5990 SW 130th Terrace, Pinecrest, FL 33156-7169.Condolences may be offered at www.heritagechapeltuscaloosa.com.
