David Clark Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 23, 2014.

David McKenzie Clark, 84, of Greensboro, N.C., passed away quietly surrounded by his children on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Wellspring Retirement Community after a long illness.
There will be a Memorial Service celebrating his life in the Sanctuary of West Market Street Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 26, 2014, immediately followed by a reception at the church. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at Hanes Lineberry Funeral Home at 515 North Elm St. from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
David was born on September 1, 1929 to David McKenzie and Myrtle Brogdon Clark of Greenville, NC. He was a graduate of Greenville High School, Wake Forest University, served in the United States Coast Guard, before graduating from New York University Law School in 1957 where he was a Root-Tilden Scholar and Editor of the NYU Law Review. After graduating law school, he clerked for two years with Justice Hugo Black at the United States Supreme Court. In 1959, he moved to Greensboro, NC, to join the law firm of Smith, Moore, Smith, Schell, & Hunter. He was an accomplished and respected litigator in Greensboro until his retirement in 2007.
David was an active community volunteer. He served as President of The Summit Rotary Club, Program Chairman of the Greensboro Jaycee Chapter, Guilford County Chapter National Foundation, Greensboro Library Board, and served on the Official Board and as a Sunday School Teacher at West Market Street United Methodist Church. He served professional organizations where his duties included serving as Chairman of the Greensboro Legal Aid Foundation, Director of The Legal Services of North Carolina, and the Board of governors of the North Carolina Bar Association.
He lived his life helping others personally and professionally. He took great interest in the well being of others and was always quick with an offer of help or a kind word. He spent much of his professional life advocating for those less fortunate giving them a strong voice to correct wrongs against them.
He was a loving father who dearly loved his children and instilled his love of sports in them. He was an avid tennis player who played on the Wake Forest tennis team. He also loved golf and played regularly at the Greensboro Country Club. He treasured the time he was able to spend with his family and many friends playing tennis and golf and enjoying a good meal.
David is survived by his five children and nine grandchildren – David McKenzie Clark (Lee Ann) of Greensboro, NC and their children Will, Patrick, and Jackson; Martha Dockery Clark of Charlotte, NC; Marietta Clark Reynolds (Richard) of Richmond, VA and her children Martha Blair, Clark, and Sarah; Carolyn Clark Taylor (Bryan) of Charlotte, NC and their children Mac, Caroline, and Julian; and McKenzie Lawrence Mullally Clark (Katie) of Carlisle, PA. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Catherine Montague Huber.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his assistant of 54 years Margaret T. Bell of Reidsville, NC and the loving staff of Wellspring Memory Care Unit.
In lieu flowers, memorials can be made to West Market Street United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be made to www.haneslineberryfuneralhomes.com .

I remember David well from many years ago.. His smile and his bow tie, as shown in this picture, were nearly always present and he made you feel good with his presence and good sense of humor. He was a fine man and excellent attorney. My sympathy to his family. Bob Baker

Dear Clark Family,

I am so very sorry for your loss. Mr. Clark lived such a full life...filled with love, family, and friends. God promises you will be together again in Paradise - Luke 23:43

Our prayers are with the family at this time of great loss. My first job out of law school at Wake Forest was as a law clerk to the Chief Judge of the US Middle District Court. Elated with successful Bar Exam results, I walked across the street to Judge Clarence Hall's court and David met me there and presented me for my swearing in, making my attorney status official. For obvious reasons that is one of those pivotal times we never forget.

Psalms 118:6, tells us that God is on our side, what could earthling men possibly do to us. How encouraging to know no matter what we go through, such as the death of a loved one, God is always with us.

We are sad of David's passing but have many happy memories of family gatherings, vacations and meals with David. Thinking of you all.

David was my classmate and friend at New York University Law School, where we socialized and worked together on the law review. He and Martha were in Washington for two years while he was clerking for the Supreme Court, and I and my new wife, my late beloved Debbie, also came to Washington. In my case, working for a professor from the Law School who was appointed Chief of Staff of a Congressional Investigating Committee.

David and I and our spouses enjoyed many social occasions together during David's stay in Washington. He was always open, friendly, honest, just, full of fun, and a great friend. His passing for me underscores our transition in life. I know David had much to be grateful for in his life -- especially his loving family. I will think of him; I will remember him; and I will miss him. May he rest in peace, and may his wonderful family be strengthened by the memory of a truly worthy human being who had a most worthwhile life.

David, Dockery, Marietta, Carolyn & McKenzie. I can't be with you to celebrate the life of your father, but the best I can wish you is that in your life you will have a trusted friend like him. I lived with David and a Lebanese Arab for two years in Greenwich Village, New York, we walked the Easter Parade from the Battery to Central Park. We stood by one another at our weddings, in his case to your mothers the indefatigable Martha Early and the indomitable Susie Mullally. He was hard working, charming, but most of all loyal and kind. He told me he wouldn't have come home from the beaches of Hawaii if his dad had not died and brought him back to responsibility, I'm glad he came home because he befriended me and is responsible for you. Who could ask for more. This condolence won't show my tears, but they are plentiful.
