David B. Howard of Dallas, Texas, passed away on February 13, 2016 at the age of 62. He was born in Dallas, Texas on March 14, 1953 to Billy Burras and Lila Lee (Robinson) Howard.
David grew up in the Pleasant Grove neighborhood of Dallas. Alongside many of his cousins, he went to Urban Park Elementary, John B. Hood Jr. High School, and W.W. Samuel High School. In high school he ran track and was the Texas state champion pole-vaulter in 1971, his senior year.
Growing up, David worked for his dad Bill at Auto Care Center, which was located across from Fair Park. When the Dallas Cowboys played in the Cotton Bowl, the family would park cars on the lot on Sundays. The cousins would run ahead to the Cotton Bowl and save seats for the men who would come once the lot was full. They also parked cars for the annual State Fair of Texas.
After graduating, he went to Abilene Christian College on an athletic scholarship. He pole-vaulted and was also in the Kinsman social club. He graduated in 1975 with a degree in Marketing.
He then moved back to Dallas and began attending the Skillman church of Christ. It was in the singles class at Skillman that he first met Judy. She asked what he did for a living; he told her he was a spy. She didn't know whether he was joking or not. They were married on April 28, 1978.
He had many titles and roles over the years. He elevated everything he did. He had a unique way of looking at things, and he brought that creativity into everything.
For the past 16 years, David has worked at Earl Owen Company as the national sales manager. In addition to building the sales team, he organized trade shows, and facilitated the re-location to the new warehouse.
David just assumed that he could do anything, and he was usually right. He taught himself piano, magic, guitar, computers, astronomy, and many other things. He was excellent at everything he did.
When his kids joined the boy scouts, he became a den leader, then a cub master, and then a scout master. During that tenure, he went to at least seven summer camps including three backpacking treks, multiple winter camps, and countless weekend camping trips.
For the past 20 years, David and Judy have been members at Prestoncrest church of Christ. Over that time, he served as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, and Elder. For about 10 years, he and Judy mentored engaged and newly married couples.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Howard; sons, Ted Howard and wife, Megan, and Roger Howard both of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Barbara Gumpert and husband, Alvin, of Dallas, Texas, Carolyn Shiffman and husband, Rick, of Orange, Connecticut, and Valeria Killingsworth and husband, Howard, of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Lila, Henry and Owen, and a host of other loving family members and friends.
The family will receive guests at a visitation on Thursday, February 18, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 7990 George Bush Turnpike, Dallas, Texas 75252. A funeral service will take place on Friday, February 19, 2016 at 10:00 AM at Prestoncrest Church of Christ, 6022 Prestoncrest Ln., Dallas, Texas 75230. Interment will follow at Restland Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Ave, Dallas, Texas 75243. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in David's memory to the Red River Family Encampment, P.O. Box 8997, Amarillo, Texas 79114-8997.

Looking back over the years and the people who have made those years memorable, David and Judy have occupied a place in my heart, soul, and Faith. Both have always been respectful and respected. I have not seen David and Judy in a number of years, but that is certainly my loss. And, I found out about David's passing quite by accident. I wish I could have had the opportunity to hug Judy and their family just to let them know that I care and am sad.
David and I, along with many Skillman friends, played ball together for years. And we were pretty good, if I do say so myself. David was a leader, coach and great example. Looking back over those years and our Moms and Dads and friends, I wish we had kept closer, but life has a way of leading us all in our separate directions, and in David's case, a whole new set of friends to influence positively. My prayer is for the family, all of David's friends, and all of us, so that when we leave this world to head Heavenward, others will look at my life and yours and think of us as fondly as I do of David. Judy, you are in my prayers and I am sending my love.
Blessings,
Jay Caple

Some of my favorite memories of David are from long New Year's Eve parties playing chicken foot and eating breakfast at midnight. Loved going camping with David and Judy. David could take a tarp and rig it up over the area, then 15 minutes later would be moving it again and trying a whole new arrangement.
This continued the whole weekend. So funny to watch. Lots of fun playing charades by the fire. David's famous peach cobbler was awesome. David is missed!!

Every single memory I have of Dave is full of joy and Laughter. He made getting to go on family scouting trips the highlight of my childhood. All the fun stories that Dave would share at scout family campouts where such a blast to listen to. I could sit and listen to Dave's stories for hours. I looked up to Dave and strive to be just as happy as he always was. He brought so much joy to all the people around him. I am so sorry for your loss but I am so joyed to know he is in heaven in a place full of joy and happiness.

Dave had many amazing abilities. Most are aware of his abilities to comfort, encourage, and empower. Some are aware of his love for the outdoors. Dave was an integral part of boy scout Troop 744. I recall Dave on many campouts keeping everyones spirts high. The times that really stick out in my mind were the longer trips, 3 weeks at Philmont, 1 week in the Colorado backwoods. Those were the trips where Dave seemed to be at ease. He appreciated the time with his Sons and his Troop family. I recall one time in particular that Dave bet me and Ted we couldn't catch a fish with our bare hands. I almost froze in the backwoods trying to prove him wrong. When we asked, "what if we had won, Dave said in a flat dry tone.."either way, that was worth it!". Dave was a great man, a solid mentor, a fantastic humorist, and a good friend.

Judy, I am so sorry for the tremendous loss you have, but I know the same God that brought you to this point will carry you forward. Thanks for being a great neighbor for many years, as you and David and family will always be remembered. May God comfort the loss, fill the void, and provide the strength you, Ted and Roger need to continue to do His will. Amen.......Joe Elliott

David was a wonderful Christian man. I never saw him without a smile on his face. He was a mentor and friend to us, a good teacher of the word, and an example to all he met. We will miss him, but will continue to love David and his special wife, Judy. We pray for peace for this beautiful family, and joy in their memories.

David was a man of integrity. I loved and respected him. He saved my life. And he will always be the twinkle in Lila's (his granddaughter's and my little girl's) eyes. He was the only true and present father I had. It brings me great sadness to know that Lila will not get to learn, love and laugh with him. They had a special bond. She referred to herself sometimes as "Granddad's Girl". But she knows she will see him again and that he is always watching her and is only a prayer away.

David was a real role model to me and to many. He lived in, and lived by, the Word of God. He was funny, outgoing, goofy, faithful, approachable, honest, transparent, loving, wise (insert just about any other good and respectable trait to this list). He always had joy written across his face (and heart you could tell), but if for some reason he didn't, he would tell you why and what you could pray for. He gave the Lord credit for his victories, and asked for help and prayer in his shortcomings. I didn't know everything about David, but I have mad respect for the open book I do know. I'll miss you David.

David was a powerful elder and Bible class teacher as he opened his heart and shared his love and faith in God. By doing so he offered the sweetest invitation to share Christ with him that I have ever felt. The love for God and for his family showed in all he said and did. An incredible man. My prayers for the church and for his family. He won his final competition and walked through that doorway home.

David was our Elder and friend, a man of strong character, faith, compassion and sweet humor. We will miss him in our Christian family at Prestoncrest, but we are comforted as we reflect on his fine Bible lessons and his personal life lessons that he was was so willing to share. These memories will be a blessing for years to come. Our deepest sympathy and Love,
