On March 3, 2013, David F. Lyons, beloved husband of Mary Sliney Lyons and devoted father and grandfather of Mark Lyons, Deirdre and William Bumbera, Kathryn and Andrew Randolph, Sarah and Matthew Randolph, and Molly and Erin Bumbera, passed away after a long illness.
David was born in Boston, MA, the only son of Louise and David M. Lyons. After graduating from Boston College, where he was Freshman Class President, he joined the Army, serving two tours in Viet Nam and was awarded the Bronze Star. After retiring, he received his Masters in Education from Loyola University, then spent 10 years as a civilian with the Department of Energy. After 30 years of federal service, David spent 20 years as a substitute teacher in Howard County – these years were the love of his life, along with golf, travel and the "Friday Club".
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 9th, at 10:30 a.m., at Corpus Christi Chapel at the Trinity School, 4985 Ilchester Rd., Ellicott City, MD 21043. A luncheon will immediately follow at the Chapel's Music Room. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Please arrive before 10:30am for the Honor Guard Service. Mass begins promptly after.

On the court and in the classroom, David was always full of humor, patience and warmth. One of the mistletoe gentle we have known. He always a French quip for me, never a disparaging remark about anybody. We share with Mary and the family our warmest remembrances of David which will always bring a smile to our lips.

So sorry to hear of Mr. Lyons passing. He had a great talent for making everyone around him smile and feel at home. I love that he called me "the little Colleen" and Regina "the little little Colleen" it always brought a warm smile to my face. Kate and the rest of the Lyons family, during this time of pain and mourning, know that your dad was a great man who brought joy and happiness to everyone he came in contact with. When I was eighteen and far away from home, and from time to time, feeling that sky were fooling down, to find someone that, with a few words ( and more) lets you know he is by you, gives you faith to believe you can finish what you came to do. I will never be grateful enough to him and Mary for their help and confidence. I send a pray to all of you from Spain, specially my friend Katie. Be strong as he was. Tons of love, Eddie (Madrid)

Dear Mary,
Mary and I are so saddened to learn of Dave's passing. He was such a good person and I will badly miss exchanging emails with him about his beloved Red Sox, the Orioles and Laurel Racecourse as well as silly jokes and politics. I so much enjoyed hearing from him. My Mary promises she will keep in touch with you.

To the Lyons family from a fellow golfer, Red Sox agitator, lunch pal, and a good listener of David's politics, please accept my sincere sympathy. He was a real hero to me.

Mary, Katie and family,
I just wanted to send my love and condolences your way. I am very sorry for your loss. When I just learned of Dave's passing in the last few minutes, my first thought was sadness for your losing him but my second was a smile and a wonderful thought of how much I liked him and what a great guy I thought he was. He always had a smile on his face and what a teaser he was. Even when he was sick earlier and I'd bring food over to the house, that man would just go on and on, such a dear, funny, loving person and I shall miss him as well. Please know that I'll keep him and your family in my prayers and thoughts. I am a better person for knowing him, even for just a fleeting moment in the time of his life-he added to the joy in mine.
With love, Karen Palermo
