David Steffner Manker, 91, died Oct. 21, 2012. He was born in Chattanooga, TN in 1921. He is survived by his wife, Jean Cole Manker. In 1949 David graduated from Vanderbilt University. He was employed by Hamilton National Bank prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army - Air Force in 1942. He served as a B-24 pilot in England with the 8th Air Force, 458th Bomb Group, 753rd squadron. David completed 31 combat missions and flew fuel to France for General Patton's tanks. He was awarded the Air Medal with Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. David Steffner Manker, 91, died Oct. 21, 2012. He was born in Chattanooga, TN in 1921. He is survived by his wife, Jean Cole Manker. In 1949 David graduated from Vanderbilt University. He was employed by Hamilton National Bank prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army - Air Force in 1942. He served as a B-24 pilot in England with the 8th Air Force, 458th Bomb Group, 753rd squadron. David completed 31 combat missions and flew fuel to France for General Patton's tanks. He was awarded the Air Medal with Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He became a B-24 instructor at Smyrna Air Base prior to his discharge as a 1st Lieutenant in 1945. He moved to Clarksdale, MS with his wife, Sara Jane Weeks, and successfully managed their large farm until after Sara's death in 1987. He was a member of Clarksdale Country Club and elder of the First Presbyterian Church; served on the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Public Library and the Board of Directors of the Coahoma Electric Power Association. In 1989 David married Jean Cole Johnson and moved to Roswell, GA. He was a member of the Sons of American Revolution in Roswell and a member of the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. David enjoyed traveling, swimming, golf, and was an avid tennis player even in his later life. He cultivated beautiful flowers and tomatoes that he enjoyed sharing with others - along with a smile, a joke, or a funny story. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 11a.m in the Kellett Chapel of Peachtree Presbyterian Church, 3434 Roswell Rd., Atlanta, GA 30305, with reception following at the church. Interment will be at Forest Hills Cemetery, Chattanooga, TN. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Tamassee DAR School, P.O. Box 8, Tamassee, SC 29686 ; Peachtree Presbyterian Church; or Homestead Hospice, 10888 Crabapple Rd, Roswell, GA 30075
