David McKnight Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2015.

On March 20, 1985, God blessed Darrell and Yvonne McKnight with a bouncing baby boy. We named him David Curtis McKnight. David attended Kindergarten and first grade in the Galena Park ISD, and second grade in the Houston ISD. In 1993, the family relocated to Austin, Texas where he attended Boone Elementary, Covington Middle School, and David Crockett High School. Upon graduation from high school in 2003, he attended Prairie View A&M University and Texas State University, respectively. God gave him two special gifts, mathematics and music. His parents hoped that he would become an engineer like his sister. However, it was his love of music that won the battle of the two gifts. His parents, as they always did, gave him their support and encouragement. Beginning in elementary school, he mastered the piano and keyboard and began playing his sister's saxophone. By the time he completed high school, it was easy to see that his love of music was more than just a passing hobby.

David's first taste of playing with talented musicians was as a member of the Mount Sinai Baptist Church musicians. They took David under their wing and encouraged his growth. He played in several bands in the Austin area, including Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears, Sheer Khan and the Space Case, and Mama K and the Shades. He made quite a name for himself and was a well-known musician in the central Texas area.

David accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Sinai by Pastor A.W. Anthony Mays. He loved his pastor and his church family. Most of all, he loved the Lord and that is why his family is at peace today. We are hurting because of the disconnection but we are rejoicing because of the salvation!
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Willie and Lou Ollie Chambers, Napoleon and Rachel Frater; paternal grandfather, J.T. McKnight; Uncle, William Earl Chambers, and Aunt Mae Francis Linder.

David leaves to hold and cherish his memories his father and wife, Darrell Curtis McKnight and Kim Houston McKnight; mother, Yvonne Reneda Chambers; sister, Pamela Stockland and husband, Bryan Stockland; nephew, Wesley; Aunts, Patsye Chandler (James), Joyce, and Mary Louise; Uncles Tommy (Sandra), Willie Fred (Ann), Raymond (Renee), and Joseph (Brenda); great-aunt, Margaret Hogan; and grandmother, Ruby McKnight. He also leaves a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

The family will receive guests Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, 5900 Cameron Road (78723) at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 3, 2015. Interment will follow Monday, July 6, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Calvary Hill Cemetery, 21723 Aldine Westfield Road in Humble, Texas. Please visit www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com for online tributes

David and I were kids together and it has been a few years since I made it out to see him play. We all thought there would be one more show. One more hug. One more smile. My heart selfishly aches that another part of my childhood is gone, but more so for his mother, father, and sister. My heart is heavy for you. One of the world's brightest lights has gone out and we all mourn this loss. May his beautiful legacy live on indeed.

To Yvonne and family. My heart goes out to you all. Just a little prescription for strength. Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous hand.

David,

My heart is truly heavy. I wish I kept in better touch with you over the years. I know if I could run into you tomorrow, you'd welcome me with your beautiful smile and a huge hug, because that's the kind and wonderful soul that you have. I'm so lucky I got to be there and witness you learning how to play sax and go on to be such a talented musician. After you passed, I looked at old messages between us and you told me you missed me and wanted to get together the next time I was in town. I wish we had. I miss you too old friend. I wish I could be there to say good bye in person, but perhaps it's best, because I can just keep imagining you're somewhere in Austin jamming out and making people smile. I'll carry you in my heart all my life. Until I see you again...

I am really happy I had the opportunity to meet and work with David. I only knew him a short time but in that time I gained so much respect for him as a musician and a person. He was responsible for me being a part of his band Mama K & The Shades for which I will forever be grateful. I learned a lot from David in that short time. He was a rare talent but very humble. He was friendly to everyone. He could have played with any number of bands and artists but he chose to devote time to this band because he could make the music he wanted to play. He left this world far too early with so much left to give. We are all sad because because he was infectious and seemed to raise all of our abilities with his immense talent yet he now has a place among the big chorus of angels. The world needs more gentle souls like David. Rest in peace.

Although it has been several years since I last saw David, I recall the last time. Then he was doing what his passion wasplaying his sax at a Sunday service when Rita and I came to share in your worship experience in Austin. I remember how proud I was of him and the gift God had blessed him with.

When I heard about David's passing, I was heart-broken. Because of my close relationship with David's dad, Darrell--from childhoodI felt so, so bad as if I had lost my own child. No words can express how saddened I am that God decided to take David home at such a young age. I know that David's parents and family know that we are all pilgrims on a sojourn through this land en route to our heavenly home. And though we are saddened by our loss, the angels in heaven are rejoicing!

To Darrell (Kim), Yvonne and the McKnight family, Rita and I will continue to pray your strength in the Lord.
