David L. Van Horn

72, passed away November 5th after a long illness. He was born in Beech Grove, Indiana, to Olin and Ann Van Horn. After graduation from Beech Grove High School and Purdue University, he began a lifelong career in education as a math teacher and football coach. In addition, he received a M.S. degree in Guidance from Butler University.
He began his career at Beech Grove High School in 1963; in 1970 he joined the staff at Hollywood Hills High School in Hollywood, Florida, where his freshman team went undefeated and as seniors won the Florida State AAAA FB Championship. He returned to Indiana, teaching and coaching for 32 years at Carmel High School. Coach Van Horn helped lead the football team to five Indiana State Championships and four undefeated seasons. He came out of retirement to work as a math tutor at the North Central High School learning center.
David was Indiana Football Coaches Association District 8 Assistant Coach of the Year and was inducted into the Indiana High School Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame for his many years as the voice of Carmel wrestling on WHJE. And in 2008 he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame.
He was past president of the Beech Grove High School Alumni Association; the Beech Grove Retired Teachers Association; and the Carmel Lions Club.
David was dedicated to the youth he mentored, both in the classroom and on the playing field. As a true disciple of John Wooden, David believed the "Teaching and coaching are the two most important professions in the world." Long after retiring, he continued to receive letters, phone calls, and visits from former players and students, thanking him for his dedication, devotion and life lessons taught.
He enjoyed immensely spending time with family and friends, playing euchre and bridge, and following the Colts, Cubs and the Pacers; and was a loyal Carmel and Purdue fan.
He will be deeply missed by the many people whose lives he touched.
He is survived by sister, Karel Van Horn-Seldner, niece Anna Seldner-Ghazaoui, and grandnephew, Samir.
A memorial gathering will take place on Thursday Nov. 21st from 4:00-7:00 PM at Little and Sons Funeral Home Beech Grove Chapel followed by a Memorial Service at 7:00 PM in the Funeral Home.
