Delia Sutherland Gaffney, 93, widow of Richard Morgan Gaffney, Sr., passed away August 12, 2014.

Daughter of the late Harry Ingersoll Sutherland and Clara Harmon Sutherland, Delia was born in West Helena, Arkansas and grew up in Marion, South Carolina. She attended Limestone College where she trained as a stenographer. She came to Greenville after college and worked for Liberty Life in the executive offices taking dictation in shorthand. In Greenville, she met and later married the love of her life Richard (known as Dick) at Buncombe Street United Methodist Church. They had been married for 72 years when he died in December, 2013. During his WWII military service they moved together to Washington, DC, Norfolk, VA and Corpus Christi, TX where she held various jobs. She returned to Greenville while he was onboard a ship in the Navy and spent the rest of her adult life in Greenville. When the war ended she became a homemaker, devoting herself to her husband, her children, her church, neighbors and friends.

Delia had a gift of style and a God given talent in recognizing beauty in the world around her and using her creativity to share it with others. She was an excellent seamstress and also sewed beautifully by hand. She enjoyed gardening and used her plants to create lovely arrangements for her dining table for Sunday dinner and for the altar in her church. She was always available to participate in school and other activities of her children. After her children were grown, Delia owned and operated The Candle Shop in Lake Forest Shopping Center but later closed it so she and Dick had more time to travel together. They enjoyed being with their friends in their bridge club, attending dances, and spending time at the South Carolina coast.

Delia was a member of Northside United Methodist Church where she played piano for the Chapel Class and she was a member of the Travel and Fellowship group there. She served for years on the altar guild arranging flowers for the altar and delivering them the next day to shut-in members of the church. She chaired the wedding committee and served on the board of trustees. She was also involved making needlepoint kneeling cushions for the chapel and the sanctuary.

For 35 years, Delia was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, first accompanied by her mother and later by Dick.

Surviving are her daughter, Delia G. (Dee) Malone and her husband John, of Greenville; her son, R. Morgan Gaffney, of St. Petersburg, FL; and her grandson, Richard Elliott Tapp and his wife Elaine, of NY, NY. Also surviving are her nephew, Baker Scott and wife Wendy of Carmel, IN; and great nieces and nephews: Jessica Scott, Keith Harrison, Aaron Harmon Avila, and Jacqueline Kudrav.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dick, her brother Sergeant Major Milton Jefferson Sutherland, USMC (Ret); her sister, Eloise Sutherland Kish; and a niece, Mary Harmon Scott Kudrav.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Northside UMC, with Reverend Don Brown officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Meals on Wheels, 15 Oregon Street, Greenville, SC 29605; Northside United Methodist Church, 435 Summit Drive, Greenville, SC 29609; or a charity of one’s choice.
