BROWN, Delmar John – Peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the Sault Area Hospital-General Site. Beloved husband of Stella for 50 years. Son of the late Francis (Frank) and Ellen (Nellie) Brown of Hilton Beach. Loving father of John Brown (Melanie), Gary Brown (Jennifer) and Stacey Brown (Jacqui). Grandfather of Amanda, Eric, Tyler, Jack, Kai, Dylan, Shea and Brock. Dear brother of June Reed (Dick), Wilma Graham (late Glen), the late Gordon Brown (friend Irene), the late Morris "Pete" Brown (late Marion), the late Lester Brown (Shirley), the late Charles "Buck" Brown and the late Frances Brown. Son-in law of the late Bill and Nancy Rogozynski. Brother-in law of the late Anne Sherbak (late George), the late Mike Rogozynski (Trudy) and Richard Rogozynski (Marlene). Delmar will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews and the many friends and acquaintances he had made over the years. Born and raised in Hilton Beach, he was a lifelong resident of Sault Ste Marie. After serving in the military during WWII, Delmar found his true calling in sailing the Great Lakes. He worked at Abitibi for 23 years as the First Mate on the tug Abitibi sailing Lake Superior and the small lakes and rivers of Northern Ontario. Later on he worked for Algoma Steel for 16 years as the First Mate on the Yankcanuck, sailing from Sault Ste Marie to Windsor, Detroit, Chicago and Cleveland. After retiring from Algoma Steel, Delmar skippered the Shingwauk for a number of years on its tours up and down the St Mary's River and through the Soo Locks. Delmar had a passion for fishing and enjoyed spending time at the trailer in Hilton Beach, keeping in touch with old friends and family. Always ready to sit down and listen to or tell a good story, his company, companionship and positive outlook on life will be sorely missed. A special thank you to the nursing staff of 2Y and 3Y North of the General Hospital and the Bayshore Nurses (Vicki and Jennifer) who helped make Delmar's final journey a peaceful one. Delmar would also like to thank the 1998 Cancer Survivor Group "Family and Friends" for their friendship and support. In keeping with Delmar's wishes a small private service was held by the family on Friday, February 12, 2010. We would like to invite all of our family and friends to join us at Gran Festa at the Quality Inn, 180 Bay Street on Sunday, February 21, 2010 between 2 pm and 5 pm for a celebration of Delmar's life. A donation in lieu of flowers to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation, Central United Church or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Barton & Kiteley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre & Kiteley Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 759-2114.

"Dear Stella, It was an honour to have Delmar as my friend. When we met in Sudbury, little did we all realize at that time how our lives would be so..." Joyce Sohm (South River, ON)
