Dennis was born on September 12, 1941 in the small farming town of Madison, Nebraska to Clarence and Hulda Nathan. Growing up, Dennis loved sports, especially football and basketball. Dennis' father died unexpectedly when he was 15, and the family moved to Denver a few years later. After high school, Dennis joined the Air Force to help support his family, and upon completing his service, moved back to Denver where he met his wife, Mary. The two were married on August 1st, 1970, and had a son and daughter. Dennis cherished involvement in their many extra-curricular activities.
Dennis graduated from Metro State where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Accounting, and went on to become a CPA. In 1968, Dennis began work in the banking industry at the First National Bank of Denver in the Audit Department. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1975, joining Central Bancorporation as Regional Controller and subsequently promoted to President of Central Bank of Garden of the Gods and Central Bank of Academy Boulevard. In early 1990, Dennis took a break from Banking and bought Mark's Dry Cleaners, but he was ultimately drawn back to his love of banking and joined Western National Bank in October, 1990, as Executive Vice-President. As Western National Bank grew and was consolidated under the American National Bank name, Dennis's role also grew, and in 2003 he became the President and CEO of American National Bank and the Sturm Financial Group. During his banking career, Dennis was very civically involved, serving on a number of non-profit boards including Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Colorado Bankers Association, the Greater Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation, the Boys & Girls Club Foundation, Pikes Peak Mental Health Center, and was a founding member of the Center for Christian-Jewish Dialogue. Dennis was also a member of the Pikes Peak Sertoma Club and the University of Colorado Executive Club.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 41 years - Mary, his son Bradley, daughter Julie, grandsons Adam and Alex, and soon-to-be granddaughter Echo.

Mary, Brad, Julie and family,
We are so happy that we were able to visit in July. Denny's smile was contagious...and we had many good laughs too. The jokes and smiles will always be with us but also what a kind and generous man who was one of the most unselfish persons we have ever know. You must be so proud of him.
Love to you all,

Dennis was truly a man with a big, big heart and a kind word. The smile in his eyes and gentle demeanor always made him a pleasure to be around. He had such a strong loyalty to his family, friends and his profession. He will be forever in our hearts and I’m very proud to have worked with him. Mary, Brad and Julie, he thought the world of you and those beautiful grand kids. You were who he talked about first, before the business at hand took place. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

The first pictures of Denny in the photo gallery are my first memories of him at Green Garden School. The smile says it all. He grew to adulthood with that same sweet yet ornery smile, and his family and church formed the basis for his life. Missed, yet comforted in knowing he is enjoying his eternal home.

Dear Mary, Brad and Julie,
No words can truly bring comfort at this tragic, difficult time, but please accept my deepest condolences. Dennis will be missed by so many, none more than the three of you.
Dennis had the ability to make people feel comfortable, he had a kind and generous heart and truly treated everyone as he wanted to be treated.
He was positive, supportive, solution oriented and his gentle humor was always ready at hand. Dennis always worked to achieve a Win / Win goal, I never saw him waiver from that philosphy. He touched the lives of many.
No doubt Dennis was a wonderful husband and father. Love and pride lit him up when he spoke of the three of you, Beloved Mary; Brad and Julie of both of whom he loved dearly and was so proud.
May God be with you at this difficult time.
Peace and God's blessings,
Janet Howe ( fomerly Pearson)
