Biography

Dennis N. Whiting, 60, passed away on January 2, 2013. He was born on August 14, 1952, the second of three sons, to Mark and Ione Whiting in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dennis attended Crestwood Elementary School, K.O. Knudsen Middle School, and was part of the first group of students to attend the newly opened Valley High School in 1966 where he played football on the 1969 State Championship team. He then attended the Utah State University studying Wildlife & Forestry Management, where he continued to develop his love of the outdoors. Dennis worked supplying reptiles to the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah. Interrupting his studies, he served his mission from 1971-1973 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Central America, which at the time included Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. Because of this service, Dennis learned Spanish and used it the remainder of his life. After his mission, Dennis continued to be active in the LDS Church and served in many leadership positions. During his time in a single adults ward, he met and married Linda Karen Bodine on June 4, 1983. To this union came one son, Colin, born on June 13, 1984. Raised on rock crushing and screening plants, dump trucks, and loaders, Dennis worked continuously the past 35 years as an employee and managing officer of the family-owned Whiting Brothers.

Dennis was an avid hunter, fisherman, and he enjoyed many outdoor activities throughout his life, including salmon and halibut fishing in Alaska, deer hunting in Nevada, antelope and elk hunting in Wyoming, and fishing in Utah. Dennis loved sports of all kinds, especially football. His passion was the outdoors, whether on a loader at work, walking the hills with a rifle or binoculars, fishing, or gardening in his backyard.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Linda K.B. Whiting; son Colin Bodine Whiting; brothers Phil M. Whiting and Craig C. Whiting; two nieces and six nephews.

Beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, he will be greatly missed.
