KOHN

DEXTER MORTON KOHN
At age 93, a longtime attorney, counselor and civic leader in Washington, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, with family at his home in Foggy Bottom.
A proud graduate of Boston Latin School, Cornell University (A.B., 1943) and Boston University Law School (J.D., 1949). He served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps, where he worked as a cryptographer in World War II. He married Emily Rose Haas of Washington in 1947. He practiced law in Washington for more than 55 years, mostly as a sole practitioner. He was a founder of Temple Sinai in Washington; a leader of many civic efforts to improve Cleveland Park, where his family lived from the 1950s to the 1980s; and was a board member of Woodmont Country Club in Rockville.
An avid golfer into his 85th year, Mr. Kohn played baseball and ice hockey in high school and college. He was a long-suffering fan of the Washington Capitals, and worked for the return of Major League Baseball to Washington. He advocated for home rule for the District. At home, he hated steak, loved fish and green vegetables, and on rare occasions enjoyed ice cream.
Devoted husband of Emily, an educator who died in 2006; the loving father of Edward H. Kohn (Staci D. Kramer) of St. Louis; John D. Kohn (Sati Kohn) of Santa Fe, N.M.; and Roger S. Kohn (Kathryn Dewenter) of Seattle; proud grandfather of Tara Kohn, Annie Kohn, Jesse Kohn, Jacob Kohn and Jonas Kohn; and caring brother-in-law of Thekla "Teddie" Schwarz.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 2, at Temple Sinai, 3100 Military Road, N.W., Washington D.C. 20015. Shiva at Mr. Kohn's residence begins after the service and ends at 8 p.m.
Mr. Kohn aided supported many nonprofit cultural, educational and research organizations. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Library of Congress, Capital Caring (50 F Street, N.W., Suite 3300, Washington, D.C. 20001) or the charity of the donor's choice.
