Don Kenneth Henckel passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the age of 73 while attending a dental implant and oral surgery conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born on September 3, 1940 in Houston, Texas to George Charles Henckel, Jr. from Hitchcock, TX and Nellie Mae Reifschneider from Temple, TX. Don Kenneth Henckel passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the age of 73 while attending a dental implant and oral surgery conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was born on September 3, 1940 in Houston, Texas to George Charles Henckel, Jr. from Hitchcock, TX and Nellie Mae Reifschneider from Temple, TX.

Don graduated in 1958 from Regan High School in Houston and then attended what is now known as Sam Houston State University in Huntsville until accepted into dental school his junior year. On June 8, 1962 he married his wife Patricia Lee Clayton. He received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston in 1965. Thereafter, Don enlisted and served as a Captain in the United States Army until being honorably discharged in March of 1968, at which time he opened his private dental practice in Houston.

He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Houston District Dental Society. He was a member and past President of the Houston Orthognathic Study Club and a member of its parent National organization, the American Academy of Gnathologic Orthopedics. In 1991, he expanded his practice into the field of Implant Dentistry and became a member of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, the International Congress of Oral Implantology, the American College of Oral Implantology and the American Society of Osseointegration. In 1994 he was asked and was honored to be selected as the Houston Aeros' Team Dentist and remained their team doctor for 18 years.

While dentistry was his primary passion, he also studied photography and enjoyed international travel, often for purposes of photography expeditions with National Geographic personnel to countries including: Bali,
Batswana, Bhutan, Canada, China, Ethiopia, France, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mongolia, Macau, Myanmar, Peru, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Don continued to play tennis until the time of his death.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers: George Edward, Carroll, and Robert. He is survived by his wife of 51 and a half years, Patricia; his children: Shauna Ray and Eric Henckel with wife Kimberly, and his 4 grandchildren: Maddison, Lexie, Kailie, and Carter.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, dentist, photographer, mentor, friend, and caregiver. His life touched countless thousands. He was honored and took great pride in caring for so many loyal patients. He is deeply loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held on Monday January 27, from 5 P.M. to 8 P.M. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Memorial Oaks Funeral Home 13001 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77079 at 12:30 P.M. on Tuesday January 28, 2014.
