It is with great sadness that we announce Don's passing on Saturday, August
2 at the age of 82 after a brief illness. Predeceased by wife Vaughan Shapton and his two brothers, Tom & Jack Shapton. Dearly loved father of Laurie & John Lock. He will be sadly missed by his nieces and nephews as well as his little dog Sugar and his great friends & neighbours.
Don comes from a family with a strong history in the Firefighting Service. His father, John C Shapton, was the first full-time Fire Chief in the City of Niagara Falls and died fighting the Maid of the Mist Fire in April 1955. His brother Tom Shapton retired as a Platoon Chief at the Niagara Falls Fire Department and his brother Jack Shapton was a Volunteer Firefighter for several years. Don joined the Niagara Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and worked his way up through the ranks and became a captain, platoon chief & deputy chief before taking an early retirement to become the fire chief of the Flamborough Fire Department. Don was very well liked and respected by the men and was a great supporter of the Volunteer Fire Fighters.
Don's family wishes to extend a very special thank you to his wonderful neighbours and to Sandra Greenhalgh & Jessica Derzak for your kindness and support through this most difficult time. Don will be remembered by his family and friends as a hard worker and loving person with great strength and courage and will be in our hearts forever.
Family will receive friends at Hetherington and Deans Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 8 at 12:00 PM and a service to celebrate Don's life will be held in the chapel at 1:00 PM with internment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
