Don McDaniel passed away in Bremerton, WA on August 7, 2017. Don was born in Jacksonville, IL on March 30, 1935 to Aaron and Dorothy McDaniel.
In 1943, Don moved to Bremerton with his dad, mom and brother Doyle. In 1946 his sister Carol was born. Don and Doyle spent many years playing baseball together. They played for Dewey Jr. High, Bremerton High School as well as American Legion. They also played for a Semi-Pro team, The Bremerton Stokers.
Don was a gifted athlete playing all sports in school. He was scouted by the Cincinnati Reds and on June 6, 1953 signed a contract to play professional baseball with the Reds organization. He played 3rd base in the Reds organization before being sidelined with a shoulder injury. In 2009, Don was named to The Kitsap Sun All-Time Kitsap Baseball team. Don was also inducted into the Kitsap Sports Hall of Fame with 2 awards. First, in 1999, he was inducted for his accolades at playing slow-pitch. He played for Olympic Sports Shop, Haselwood Buick, Scotty's Tavern and was picked up for tournaments by Gene Lobe. Don made many great friends playing slow-pitch. Don was also an avid golfer. He played in many tournaments with his boys Steve and Greg. Don was a member of Kitsap Golf and Country Club.
Don owned Don's Enco from the early 1960's until 1974. Prior to owning Don's Enco, he worked as a welder in the Puget Sound Shipyard and for Standard Oil. In 1973, Don took a job at Central Kitsap School District. He was the Director of Transportation until retiring in 2000. He worked for 27 years without taking a day off. Steve and family, please accept my sincere condolences to you on the loss of your Dad. I was lucky enough to get in a round of golf with both of you a few years ago and he was a fine man, for sure. That is reflected in you as well, Steve.

Aunt Carol -
What a great uncle Don was to us. Gene, Nick, and I still remember our trip and the fun we had golfing, batting cages, and of course the Mariner's game!
Uncle Don was kind, reserved, spoke gently, and loved a good laugh. You were always there for him. May your love and memories guide you during this difficult time.
Hugs, BIG HUGS to you and family.
Our deepest sympathy and love -
Gene, Christine, and Nick

Dad--I know that you are dancing in Heaven right now with mom--you two were pretty special together. I will always remember how patient you were when you were trying to teach me something. I must admit that I was not that good of a listener when you were trying to teach me. Thanks for always making sure that we had everything we needed when we were growing up. I will always remember the special times we all had watching you play baseball, fishing with Grandpa Percy, oh and not to forget those Sunday afternoon golf outings! As Patty said when I told her you had passed---"Oh thank goodness Jack now has someone to play catch with." Give mom a hug for me and until we meet again. Love Julie

Thanks Dad,
How can I ever express my gratitude for everything you did for us. You were always patient, kind and understanding. Even in the toughest of times. You always had time to do something for us or drive hours to see an event whether it be sports, a play or hammer a nail you were always there. Every time I look around my house I see something you built or helped me build, you will always be near. Thank you for teaching me the game of golf, we got to enjoy that for over 50 years. Mostly, thank you for showing me how to be a good Dad. You are the best!
