Aunt Kyle,
Uncle Don was always so very special to me. His hugs were the best, and I always loved visiting so I could get one of his big bear hugs! I will miss seeing him again, and will love him always! Can you just imagine him, Daddy, Randy, Patsy, and Ted in Heaven with Grandmother? They must be giving her fits!! :) You are in my thoughts and prayers. I love you!

I guess it's almost time Major. The world will suffer a great loss from your absence, but they will not forget your impact.
You are the most important man I have and ever will have rendered customs and courtesies to. You are the reason I stand and the reason I wade forward.
Rest easy Sir, I love you.

I distinctly remember the assignment. I cannot remember if it was first or second grade, but I remember doing it. We were asked to write a paragraph on who our heroes were and why. I recall many of my friends choosing comic book characters, athletes, or famous figures, but my choice was easy. My hero was my Grandpa. He was a self-made man, an all-state athlete, a war hero, a successful businessman, a loving husband and father. He seemingly could build or fix anything with his hands, was a man of strong convictions, and a man of great faith. He was my hero then and is to this day. For 32 years I could call and speak to the man that had done more to shape my character than anyone else, outside of Jesus Himself.
Yesterday, my hero passed away. My Grandpa has gone on to meet the Savior and King that He loved and has taken his place around the Throne of the Lamb. Or, possibly, the marine is guarding Heaven's golden streets like the Marine Hymn says. I know this, I will see him again and that will be a great day.
I will miss you.
