Donald Baggs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 24, 2012.

Donald T. Baggs, 83, of Munsonville, died Friday, December 21, 2012 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH following a period of declining health.

He was born in St. John's, The Dominion of Newfoundland on June 8, 1929, the son of Joseph S. and Irene (Thompson) Baggs. He grew up in St. John's and was a graduate of Prince of Wales College, one of the city high schools.

Don went on to receive a BA from Duke University in Durham, NC, his Masters of Divinity from Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ and his Masters in Education from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In 1955, Don became a naturalized US citizen.

His professional experience included Pastor for the United Methodist Church in Clinton, NJ and Nyack, NY, Succasunna, NJ and New Dover of Edison Township in NJ; Career Consultant for Career Crossroads in both Halifax, Nova Scotia and Brattleboro, VT; Guidance Counselor for the Nova Scotia Department of education – Adult Vocational Training Division; Recruitment Officer for the Council of Maritime Premiers in Halifax; Coordinator for the Adult Learner Services and adjunct faculty at Keene State College; and Retail Merchandiser for Brown & Williamson Tobacco and also for Proctor and Gamble, Cosmetics Division.

A significant experience and professional highlight for Don was coaching adult students in the preparation of a portfolio of life experiences which demonstrated sufficiently high levels of learning equivalent to college instruction. Portfolios were evaluated by a committee of faculty members who awarded academic credit to the student.

Don was an avid reader of history and historical novels. He also enjoyed traveling, antiques, furniture refinishing and HO Scale Model Railroading.

He is survived by three children Douglas Baggs of Loxahatchee, FL, Steven Baggs of Boca Raton, FL and Judith Malinoski of Cranberry Township, PA; thirteen grandchildren and one great grand daughter; and one sister Jean Haines of Kalso, British Columbia, Canada. His son Donald T. Baggs, two brothers Eric Baggs and George Baggs and two sisters Margaret Roil and Ruth Laganga all died earlier.

Don was married to Marleen Ann Baggs (nee Reekstin) who died on June 8, 2010.

Services for Don will be held on Thursday, January 3rd, 2012, at 5:00 PM at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. A half-hour calling hour will be held at 4:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Road, Swanzey, NH 03446.

We were deeply saddened to learn of Don's passing from his daughter Judy. We always knew him as an intelligent, fun-loving uncle figure (he was my mother's cousin) who enjoyed discussing politics and loved a good joke. We will miss him dearly. Condolences to his entire family.

Sorry to hear of Donald's passing. Although I never met Don, I had many conversations with his late brother Eric about the Baggs family and knew of Don and the extended family. My Mother, Muriel Baggs would have been Donald's first cousin. As we just learned today of his recent death we would like to send our sincere condolences to all his family and Gods peace during this time.

Don was my uncle whom I had not seen or heard from for many, many years. I reconnected with him last fall by telephone and enjoyed our all too brief and far too late contact. I am the son of Margaret Roil, his sister, and I live in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. I would be delighted to hear from one of his children if that was possible. I can be reached at my email address below.

My condolences to his friends and family. If he was as good a person as my Mom was, he was indeed a fine fellow. I am proud of my Baggs connection and I am sorry that my knowledge of his passing has came so late.

To my good friend Don, you were always there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on or just someone to talk to. You always knew just what to say to make things so much better and I could always count on you to make me laugh and put a smile back on my face. You will be missed.
Love ya always your friend,

It was with sadness that we heard of Don's passing. It was only late last summer when Don and I were putting together the family's geneology. We hope the family finds consolence in knowing that Don is now in a far better place. Our sympathies and best wishes go out to you in your moment of grief. Eric and Winnie Baggs, Topsail, Newfoundland.
