Mr. Donald R. (Don) Bowers, 76, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Hospice Home at High Point following a long period of declining health.
A resident of this area all of his life, Don was born in High Point on January 19, 1937 to the late Clarence and Viola Swing Bowers. Don was a member of Archdale Friends Meeting, sang in the choir, served on numerous committees and was a Sunday School Teacher. Don was recognized by the Meeting House for his service by honoring him with the Archdale Friends Meeting Quaker Man of the Year Award.
Don graduated from High Point Central High School and from High Point College in 1959. His teaching career spanned Randolph County, including Randleman for 20 years; Ramseur, Trinity High School, NorthState Business College; West Davidson, Thomasville, and GTCC. He volunteered at C.O.A.T., Communities in Schools, Trinity Historical Society; and Mendenhall Plantation. He was married to Mary Ann Pless Bowers, who preceded him in death in 2000.
Surviving are his daughters, Meredith Bowers of Trinity and Heather Thompson and husband Mark of Trinity and their two daughters; Jessica and Sarah Thompson. Also surviving is a special Brother-in-Law, Jacob "Sonny" Pless. Don also has many other cousins, relatives and acquaintances who loved him dearly.
A celebration of Don's life will be held at Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Archdale Friends Meeting, 114 Trindale Road, Archdale, with Pastor David Mercadante officiating. Interment will follow in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 pm Sunday at Sechrest Funeral Service, 120 Trindale Road, Archdale.
