Donald Gene (Butch) Butcher of Merritt Island passed away Friday, March 21, Cape Canaveral Hospital at the age of 78. Butch was born August 11, 1935 in Zanesville, Ohio. He is the son of the late Frank Butcher and Hazel Butcher Prior. He was a native of Zanesville, and a graduate of Bishop Rosencrans. He began work for North American Rockwell in California before joining the USAF in 1955. He also worked a year in Air Force Reserve Sea Service and returned to employment with Rockwell International accumulating 42 years of service. Donald Gene (Butch) Butcher of Merritt Island passed away Friday, March 21, Cape Canaveral Hospital at the age of 78. Butch was born August 11, 1935 in Zanesville, Ohio. He is the son of the late Frank Butcher and Hazel Butcher Prior.
He was a native of Zanesville, and a graduate of Bishop Rosencrans. He began work for North American Rockwell in California before joining the USAF in 1955. He also worked a year in Air Force Reserve Sea Service and returned to employment with Rockwell International accumulating 42 years of service. He worked on all the areospace rocket and shuttle programs at KSC and retired as Associate Supervisor of National Operations (Shuttle Move Crew). He was a member of Moose Lodge 2073, Legionaire and American Legion Post 332. Butch was an avid golfer, fisherman, mechanic and restoring vintage vehicles.
In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by his son, James Leslie; brothers Fred and Ron Butcher. Survived by Jean, his wife of 34 years; daughters Kathy (Charles) Groseclose, Brenda (Patrick) Tracy, Donna (John) Walker, Frances Butcher and Penny Bowers, and his step-father Ralph Prior of Nashport. He had 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. His brothers Steve (Nancy); Mike (Sue) and sisters Sue (Ken) Miller and Geneva Sue Roberts. Butch was dearly loved by all and will be greatly missed.
Arrangements entrusted to Brevard Memorial Funeral Home, 5475 North US Hwy 1, Cocoa, Fl 32927. There will be a viewing Friday, March 28 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Funeral services will begin Saturday, March 29 at 1:00 PM with a viewing at noon. Following interment services at the cemetery, food and refreshments will be provided at the Moose Lodge 2073, 3150 North Courtney Parkway, Merritt Island.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Merritt Island Moose Lodge 2073, Hospice of St Frances or a charity of your choice.
