Peoria: Donald Joseph Kaliher, 86, of Peoria passed away at 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Heddington Oaks in West Peoria with his son at his side. Don was born on June 24, 1927 in Henry, IL the son of Dr. Vernon and Irene Hofer Kaliher. He married Marcella June Friday on July 4, 1952 in Peoria. He is survived by his son, Zackary C. (Mary Ann) Kaliher of Old Orchard Beach, ME; three grandchildren, Leah, of Beverly, MA, Haley of Albany NY, and Brendan of Old Orchard Beach,ME; one brother, Vernon (Giggs) Kaliher of Springfield, VA; one sister, Loraine (Thomas) Koehler of Cedar Rapids, IA. Don was born on June 24, 1927 in Henry, IL the son of Dr. Vernon and Irene Hofer Kaliher. He married Marcella June Friday on July 4, 1952 in Peoria.
He is survived by his son, Zackary C. (Mary Ann) Kaliher of Old Orchard Beach, ME; three grandchildren, Leah, of Beverly, MA, Haley of Albany NY, and Brendan of Old Orchard Beach,ME; one brother, Vernon (Giggs) Kaliher of Springfield, VA; one sister, Loraine (Thomas) Koehler of Cedar Rapids, IA.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-one years, his parents, and one brother, Charles Eugene Kaliher.
Don graduated from Henry High School in 1945 and immediately entered the U. S. Navy serving admirably until his honorable discharge in 1946. He earned an Associate Degree from Brown's Business College and had a forty year career with Caterpillar Inc. He worked in Denver, Tokyo, Singapore, Brazil, and finished in Morton, retiring in 1989.
Don enjoyed golfing, travel and sports of all kinds. He was a life-long fan of the Detroit Tigers and Lions. Regular visits to Maine to spoil his three grandchildren, Leah, Haley, and Brendan Kaliher were on his agenda. His only child Zackary works for the state of Maine.
His family would like to express their thanks to the staff at OSF St. Francis Hospital, as well as the compassion and professionalism shown by the staff at Heddington Oaks in West Peoria.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Msgr. William A. Watson will officiate. Reception will follow service.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that any memorial donation be made to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, in Peoria Heights, IL, or the donor's choice. His remains have been donated to medical science.
