Donald Francis Lively, 68, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Victoria Care Center in Ventura, California. His death was the result of Pneumonia secondary to a stroke.

Donald was born October 4, 1942 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. He was raised in Pekin and Springfield, Illinois. Donald was preceded in death by his father William Francis and Mother Eloise. He was survived by his son, Christopher; step daughters Shirley and Cathy. Grandchildren include Bryan, Megan, Lauren and Cole. Surviving siblings include Mark, Billy, Sharon, Roxanne, Marvin and Walter. In addition, Donald is survived by his beloved aunt, Lottie Viola Bong.

Donald proudly and honorably served his country through service in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1960 through 1963. He completed Basic Combat and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Duty stations include Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and Overseas service in Thailand.

Following military service, Donald earned a Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering from California State University, Fullerton. After graduation, Donald had a distinguished career in engineering, working for companies such as Morton Thiokol, Aero Jet, NASA's Ames Research Center, Cavotec Dabico and Masson & Hanger. As a Senior Engineer for Masson & Hanger, Donald distinguished himself by designing and implementing the aptly named "Pink Water" treatment system to filter explosive residue from industrial waste water. Donald's instinctively conservative nature was credited for saving millions in costs to his employers with every project he worked.

As a young man, Donald enjoyed flying private aircraft. He earned his private pilot credentials while stationed in Hawaii through lessons offered by the Aero Club. He often dreamt that he would one day fly again in his retirement; sadly his health would not permit it. There is no doubt that he is finally free to fly again.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura , CA. Condolences may be left at www.TedMayrFuneralHome.com
