November 14, 1929 –July 16, 2013

Don passed peacefully in the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the age of 83.
Don will be lovingly remembered by his family: sister Shirley, wife Beverley, sons Jim (Marie-Claude), Terry (Christine), Doug (Tracey) and Mike (Kirsten), and daughter Laurie (Chris).
He also leaves grandchildren David (Lindsay), Sarah (A.J.), Steven, Adam and Dustin, and great-grandchildren Aubrey and Oliver, as well as many relatives and friends.
Don was predeceased by brothers George ("Lefty") and Bill, and parents Stanley and Edna.
Born in 1929 in New Westminster, BC, Don was the third of four children. Don excelled at sports, especially basketball, during his high school years. After graduation in 1948, he trained as a teacher and in 1951 and 1952, taught grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse in Martin's Prairie. He then became principal of a small school in Brocklehurst. Don and Beverley married in 1952 and welcomed their first child a year later. Don changed career paths and started to work for his father in law at B.C. Interior Saw Mills.
1955 saw a move to Ashcroft to work at the mill there. This is where Don took up curling and fishing. Two more sons were born and in 1957, the family moved back to Kamloops where Don returned to the mill there.
Two more children came along in 1961 and 1962. Don continued to work and enjoy his favorite sports. When Weyerhaeuser bought the mill in the early seventies, Don continued to work there, eventually becoming a vice-president before retiring in the late seventies. Afterwards, he worked occasionally as a consultant for the company.
Don had many interests. He was a past president of both the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation and the Rotary Club of Kamloops. He loved sports including golf and fishing and even tried scuba diving. He had many wonderful fishing adventures with his sons and caught his biggest fish ever on his last outing.
Through the years, Don traveled with family several times to Mexico and Hawaii. Very special to him was family time at the cabin at the Shuswap where he would beat us all at crib and enjoy good food and always much laughter.
Don was an excellent pool player. In his youth, he would shoot pool for money to pay for dates with Bev. Don also was passionate about his stamp collection and spent hours working on it. Another passion was his vegetable garden, especially his strawberries and peas.
Don was diagnosed with Parkinson 's disease while in his early 70's. He continued to stay active even as the disease progressed. In 2008, he moved into Berwick On The Park for a little extra care. While there, he continued to shoot pool daily, play crib and socialize with friends old and new.
Don's last several months were spent in care at Kamloops Senior Village until his passing. The family would like to thank Drs. Chung and Takahashi as well as the excellent, caring medical staff at Kamloops Senior Village. A big thank you too, to everyone at Berwick On The Park where Dad spent four very happy years.
A Celebration of life for Don will be held in the Schoening Funeral Chapel on Tuesday July 23rd, 2013 at 1:00pm. No flowers please. Should friend desire, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Society of B.C. 600-890 West Pender Street Vancouver, BC V6C 1J9.
