Donald Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 6, 2016.

Donald Frederick Martin age 55 of Herring Cove passed away Monday September 5th at the VG Hospital with his wife and daughters at his side.
He was the Son of Fred and Olive Martin.

Don was a firefighter. He became a volunteer firefighter for the Herring Cove Volunteer Fire Department as a teenager in 1976 and spent many years serving his community until 2001. He became a career firefighter in 1982 at DND and remained there working at the job he loved rising in rank to Platoon Chief. He was passionate about representing both the individual firefighters and the integrity of the DND Fire Department through his involvement with the PSAC Union as a member and Local President.

Besides being a firefighter he was also a committed volunteer serving on several boards including: Spryfield Rink Board, Herring Cove Rate Payers, JL Ilsley Girls Hockey Team and various other sport and community events. Whenever there was a call for volunteers Don gave of his time freely and energetically.

His dedication for his job and community was surpassed only by his passion and dedication to his family. He took care of everyone he loved. Coming from a large family his sense of family commitment kept him close to his roots and he was always on hand to assist. Don was a demonstrative father and husband, never letting his daughters forget how proud he was of them. Married for 27 years, never a moment went by that his love and respect was not shown or felt.

Survived by his wife Janet Martin; daughters, Megan and Taylor, mother, Olive Martin; siblings, Barbara (predeceased Rupert) Swinimer, Janice (Gus) Lethbridge, David Martin, Peter (Debbie) Martin, Glenn (Lisa) Martin, Angela (Chris) McNeil; nieces and nephews, David and Daniel Swinimer, Michelle Martin, Kristen Whitehead, Jenna and Lee-Ann Martin, Mary Elizabeth and Kathleen McNeill; grand nieces and nephews, Danielle, Kameron and Axl.

Predeceased by father, Frederick Martin.

Visitation will be held 2-4 p.m. Saturday, September 10, 2016, at J A Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive. Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 12, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Church, Herring Cove.

To The Entire Martin And Extended Families:

We are all still in shock regarding the terrible news of Donald's passing.

Please accept our most sincere condolences for this devastating loss to each one of you.

I am totally at a loss for words at this most difficult time in your lives, and about the only advice I can offer would be to try to remain focused on all of the many good times that you spent with Donald over the years.
This may give you some comfort during this dark time, but not as much as knowing that he is no longer suffering, and that he is now in the hands of the Lord.

The entire family is in our thoughts and prayers.

May Donald rest in peace.

Take care, and remain strong.

Regards
Irene and David Spearns and Family

To All The Martin Family,

I am just so sad to hear that Donald has passed away. Although he was 55 I can't help but think of him as an early-20 something. Where did the years go. He was a sweetheart of a guy who always had a smile and a great giggle. My heart goes out to Olive, his wife and children, and all the family. I hope as the days pass when you think of Donald a smile comes to your face rather than a tear. Please know I send my deepest condolences and am so glad I knew him.

Taylor & Megan, I am very sorry for your loss. Having lost my father only 3 1/2 years ago I understand how hard this is and no one else will truly share a friendship and a relationship like daughter and father. I know that your dad was a remarkable man and well known in the community. He will live on in everyone's hearts and will definitely be a long for the ride!
Thinking of you and your family at this time.

To the entire Martin family;

Pam & I as so sorry to hear of Donald's passing.

I will forever remember his booming voice, and his smile, as he always would shyly come up to me, and say " Well hello Mikey.. or should I call you Sergeant Spearns " ...

We would always shake hands, and for our brief encounter, we were transported back to our childhood days, back to Herring Cove, up to what ever mischief he and Greg tried to hide from our parents.

Donald was taken from us far too soon, but something tells me that Fred needed a buddy in Heaven

How can anyone look at his picture and not smile.

Safe Home
