Donald Savastano Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2018.

Donald Louis Savastano passed away suddenly on Friday, January 26, 2018 after a recent diagnosis of stage 4 cancer.

Don was born in Queens, New York and grew up on Long Island. He had become a carpenter after working with and learning from his dad as a kid. Don did work for commercial companies but after moving to Sidney and a short time with the union he became a successful self employed carpenter. He was known for his high-quality work and perfectionism. He always tried to reach out and help those he could by teaching them "the right way to do things."

Don lived in Sidney for the past 10 years with his loving girlfriend of almost 12 years, Julie Wheeler and helped her raise her boys, Alex and Kaspar Gray. He is also survived by his mother, Annette Savastano Dart (James); four brothers, John, Charles, Louis and Doug Savastano and their families; two sisters, Debbie Legat and Cindy Savastano and their families. He was predeceased by his father, John Savastano. May they be together again in heaven for Don had been very close to him and missed him dearly. Don was thought of as a wonderful and even an angelic person by those who knew him and will be greatly missed but to see him again when time.

A special thank you to those at Bassett Hospital and Tri-Town ER for the wonderful, honest and genuine care Don received. Also, thank you to hospice so he could spend his last days in the comfort of his home with those he loved.

Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00pm in the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand Street, Oneonta.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 10:00am at the Oneonta Assembly of God Church, 1776 County Highway 48, Oneonta with Rev. John Grenier officiating.

I just read this story of the life of Don. He had a great life with a lot of love surrounding him. I'm so sorry for the loss his family is feeling. We never know how or when we will leave this world, but God does, and He prepares us to see Him. May all his family be touched by so many who didn't know Don, and who sent their best wishes to all.

I was so Sorry to read this...this honest hardworking Carpenter reminds me of my Loving Father who just passed away at 91. He worked hard his whole life taking care of all of us 7 kids and my Beautiful Mother who was waiting for him in Heaven. His sons followed in his footsteps. Mr Savastano surely deserved to win the money to provide for his loving family. Very Sad story but he is now with his Father whom he loved and missed., knowing his family are provided for. Being a Carpenter takes a lot of Skill and Perseverance. I am so Sorry for your loss and just know Donald will be waiting for you in Heaven. we all must go on....

I, also, did not know Don however I wish that I could have. It is a very nice obituary and I'm sure he would be very touched. I am sorry that Don did not get to enjoy his winnings on himself and his loved ones. As much as we would all like to enjoy a life with all that the world offers, I am sure that Don would not trade his mansion in heaven for all the gold in this world. Where he gets to personally see the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! And one day soon we will all have that glorious opportunity! So, Don, buddy hold on to Jesus's feet and save a spot for us, would yah? I ask the peace of God to cover your loved ones and give them a wonderful touch! Your friends in the Lord!

This is a bittersweet story that will touch the heart's of so many more than just myself. Mr. Savastano sounds like a wonderful man and while I am glad for his lottery windfall it sounds like his beloved Julie, children, and family was his true windfall. May he be as blessed in the after life as he was on Earth. RIP wonderful Mr. Savastano!

I was saddened by the story of your death. Not just for you, but especially for your family. I'm sure they were over-joyed by your windfall. Whether your diagnosis was known at the time or not. This was the worst possible outcome. This story on FoxNews and the picture that went along with it. Brought tears to my eyes. Your family can take comfort in happiness you got from your win. Even though it was short-lived.

Though Don and I had not been in touch with one other over the past 10 years or so due to life changes, prior to that we spent a lot of time together. He was a great friend, and I will always remember the good times we had. Hearing the news of his passing really saddens my heart. I feel fortunate to have been able to spend the time with him that I had. He was good man, and as I said, a great friend.

Don's story of winning a lottery and dying so soon afterwards has now made international news. I cried for the cruel irony of losing his life so soon afterwards to undiagnosed late stage cancer.

Then, I searched and found his full obituary here, and I'm so happy that it seems he had a happy life with his lady love and the children, as that's what matters.

I am so glad to know just a bit about him. He seems like a great guy who gave of himself to others, a friend and a great family member. I think that's the best things that can ever be said about a man ( or lady). I am reminded to live each day to the fullest.

My deepest condolences from Granbury, Texas, a small town near Fort Worth. Don has made an impact and difference to so many people. He sounds like a really loved and loving man with great woodworking skills he enjoyed. I'm so sorry he didn't have more time with those of you who love him so. I wish you peace and God's love at this time and always.

I don't know Don or his family but learned of this and what happened on a news source online. I was very touched by Mr. Savastano and his well being as a human with care and love for others. I am truly sorry for the family's loss. I just lost my father on December 11th 2017 and it hurts badly to lose someone you really love and care about. Even thought I don't know this family or Mr. Savastano but had I known him I am certain he was a wonderful man and he is dancing with God in heaven. I am here for this family if they ever just need anything. With love from Marlin Texas James Quier and Cheryl Williams. God Bless y'all

I've met Don a few times while with Julie at my dance class. He was a very polite gentlemen. I worked with Julie years ago and she's been a member in my line dance class for many years. Several years while Julie worked at Broome Dev. Center, she brought one of the individuals to dance, and though she no longer works for them, she continues to dance in my class. She's a joy to have in my class. I"ve always loved working with Julie, truly a hard worker for a young girl and pleasant to be around. She always talked highly of Don. So sorry for him and his family. He sounds like a hard worker himself and an outstanding citizen. So sad. Cancer Sucks!! Prayers with you all.
