Dora Sue (Amick) Ahlbrand lost her battle with cancer on September 26,2013.
While surviving the deaths of her youngest child, Edward Ahlbrand, in 1999 and
then her husband, David Ahlbrand ,in 2002; Sue leaves behind her other children;
Brenda Ahlbrand, Will (Janie) Ahlbrand, and Ken Ahlbrand all of Columbus; 3
grandchildren, Matthew Ahlbrand, Jon Ahlbrand, and Katelyn Ahlbrand, all of
Columbus; and her sister, Carol Ratcliffe of Scottsburg, lN as well as a large
extended family. As Sue requested, there will be no service.
Sue was born in Scottsburg, lN on June 79, 1941 to Hollis "Tip" Amick and
Margaret (Everitt) Amick. As a young lady, she met David Ahlbrand of
Brownstown, lN; marrying him on November 25, 1960. They quickly started a
family and moved to Columbus, lN. ln 1970, their youngest child, Ed, was born
with a serious genetic disorder. He was given six months to live. Sue dedicated
herself to giving him the excellent care that doctors later confessed was what
allowed him to live 29 years. She sacrificed a great deal to do "what you're
supposed to do" and set an incredible example for everyone who knew her.
Amazingly, while she was devoted to Ed's care, this humble, unassuming 5-foot
tower of strength still managed to run a household, maintain a successful 42-year
marriage, and raise her other children to be productive, contributing members of
the community who actually enjoyed their mother's company.
Sue Ahlbrand will be missed.
The family would like to thank the staffs of Columbus Regional Hospital's Critical
Care Unit (Support.Foundation.CRH.org) and Our Hospice of South Central lndiana
(OurHospice.org) for the excellent, compassionate care provided to Sue and those
around her. ln lieu of flowers, please send donations in Sue's memory to either of
those organizations.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Myers-Reed Chapel.
