Arrangements under the direction of Hainstock's FuneralSMILLLIE, Doreen Almeda Victoria

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Doreen (Knowlton) Smillie on May 4, 2014, at the age of 83, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Doreen's parents, Victor and Almeda Knowlton, died before she was six, and she was raised by her older brother Gordon and her aunts Sadie and Lily in Brandon, Manitoba. After a year at Brandon College, she enrolled in nursing at the University of Alberta Hospital, graduating in 1953. She took further training in Toronto and then worked as an instructor at the U of A. She was a very caring, attentive and thoughtful person, which made her an exceptional nurse. Those qualities also made her a great friend and a devoted centre of her family life. She was a special support to several aunts and uncles in their elderly years. She kept in close touch with many long term friends, who enriched her life immeasurably.
She married Lawrence Bruce Smillie in 1956 and together they raised four sons. Once all the boys were in school, she returned to nursing part-time at the Aberhart Hospital. Throughout her life Doreen was devoted to her faith and to her church. She also pursued art, needlework, quilting, and genealogy, authoring a book about her Knowlton family history in 2012.
In addition to her parents, Doreen was predeceased by her brother Gordon and his wife Muriel, to both of whom she was very close. She is survived by her loving husband Lawrence, her sons Tom (Donna), Ross (Therese Thompson), Scott (Meheret Worku), Mark, and seven grandchildren: Sara, Andrea, Michael, Sean, Rebecca, Rachel and Ashley, as well as many cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Knox-Metropolitan United Church, 8307 109 street, on Saturday, May 10 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Knox-Metropolitan United Church and/or Sustainable East African Education and Development Society (S.E.E.D.S.) of Alberta.
