Doris Quackenbush Phillips passed away peacefully in Jasper on Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at the age of 89. She was known to friends as Dorie and to family as Geema (hard G). Dorie was born November 27, 1924 in Oneonta, New York and was the daughter of the late Emmett L. Quackenbush and Marion Coats Quackenbush.

She became a nurse during the Second World War. While at Bellevue Hospital, in New York City, she met the “love of her life,” Richard, who was known to friends as Doc and to family as Gumps. Doc and Dorie settled down in Marcellus, New York, where they became valued members of the community.

A talented painter and printmaker, Dorie was able to travel to all corners of the earth, and remained artistically, civically, and politically active well into her 80s (a proud Democrat, she’d want you to be clear on that). She loved painting, watching tennis, looking after her children and grandchildren, and spending summers at camp on Skaneateles Lake.

She brought joy and love and comfort to those who knew her. Her disarming warmth, welcome, and acceptance of all were her superpowers. She leaves behind a large family extending from coast to coast. She will be greatly missed.

Dorie was preceded in death, by her husband of over 50 years, Dr. Richard H. Phillips.

She is survived by her brother, Emmett (Bud) Quackenbush (Pat); her five children, Valerie P. Bulloch Vann, Richard H. Phillips Jr. (Maridee), Hugh K. Phillips (Toni Toland), Nancy C. Phillips (Hank Miller), and Mark V. Phillips (Debbie); grandchildren, Maxwell Bulloch (Lee Ann), Heather Martin (Kyle), Heidi Cribbs (Eric), Zach Phillips (Allison), Elizabeth Luttinger, Anthony Comis, Robert Comis Jr. (Jennifer), Larissa Comis, Mark Phillips Jr. (Vita), Ryan Phillips (Michelle), Rebecca Fabrizio; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of her life at Baltimore Woods Nature Center located at 4007 Bishop Hill Road in Marcellus, New York, on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, from 2 until 5 p.m.

Gifts in memory of Dorie Phillips may be made to Baltimore Woods Nature Center, P.O. Box 133, Marcellus, NY 13108.
