Dorothea Etta "Dot" Whitney Reid, 88, passed away at her home on Monday, August 18, 2014 after a long illness. A native of Athens, she was the daughter of the late Col. Frederic Whitney and Eva Catherine Beller Whitney, who returned to Athens when he retired from the United States Army after World War II. Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy W. Bishop. Dot worked at the University of Georgia in the Testing and Evaluation Office for over 30 years and was an avid Bulldog fan. Dorothea Etta "Dot" Whitney Reid, 88, passed away at her home on Monday, August 18, 2014 after a long illness.

A native of Athens, she was the daughter of the late Col. Frederic Whitney and Eva Catherine Beller Whitney, who returned to Athens when he retired from the United States Army after World War II. Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her sister, Nancy W. Bishop.

Dot worked at the University of Georgia in the Testing and Evaluation Office for over 30 years and was an avid Bulldog fan. She was an active member and officer in Entre Nous, a professional group for women in business, in association with the YWCA. Mrs. Reid taught kindergarten Sunday school at First Presbyterian Church for many years and was a Girl Scout Brownie Troop leader. She had a strong love for children and was a second mother to many during her lifetime. Mrs. Reid was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was active later in life at Milledge Avenue Baptist Church where she was involved with the Golden Glows.

Survivors include daughter, Barbara J. Reid, PhD of Athens, a retired professor in special education; sister, Catherine W. Rice of Carthage, Ill, nieces, Lou B. Biggs (John) of Fernandina Beach, FL, Catherine R. Rouyer (Alwyn) of Seattle, WA, and Mary Anne Kutyla of Simsbury, Conn.; nephew, Thomas Y. Bishop, of Holiday, FL and a number of great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2PM Thursday, August 21st in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev. Edward Bolen officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2PM prior to the service.
