She graduated from Broughton High School in 1943, Peace College in 1945 and received a BA in Journalism from UNC in 1947.
Dot lived a full and wonderful life of service to her family, her community, her schools and her church. She was a loving and caring mother, wife and friend; always positive and encouraging. She loved entertaining, loved her friends, and loved creating a warm home for all.
At Broughton, Dot served on the Student Council, was President of the National Honor Society, Editor of the Latipac school newspaper and participated in Little Theater and Spanish and Latin Clubs.
At Peace College, Dot was President of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society, and was active in Student Council and the International Relations Club. She later served a 3 year term on the Board of Visitors at Peace College and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2001.
Dot graduated from Carolina, but once she met and married M.A. "Patches" Meares she became an avid N.C. State Wolfpack fan! Dot and Patches were married for 65 years and enjoyed traveling around the world with good friends supporting Wolfpack athletics.
Dot and Patches were long-time members of the Carolina Country Club where they enjoyed golfing, dancing and the company of many friends.
Dot was a lifetime member of Edenton Street United Methodist Church where she enjoyed the Hugh Isley Sunday School Class for many years and served in the Stephen's Ministry, a lay caregiving ministry.
Mrs. Meares is survived by a brother, David Wood Swain (Berta) of Knoxville, Tenn., two sons, Robert Emory Meares (Peggy) and Paul Allen Meares (Lu) of Raleigh, a daughter, Mary Meares Scott (Lee) of Rocky Mount and grandchildren Matthew Meares (Laura), Brian Meares, Catherine Renbarger (Brian), Jessica Meares and Patricia Meares, and great-granddaughter Zoe Adams Meares.
The family wishes to thank the Crowder family for 12 years of faithful and loving care. They have been such a wonderful blessing to Patches, Dot and the entire family.
