Dorothy Evelyn Gucker died peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2016 in Lakewood Ranch, FL at the age of 76. Dorothy is survived by her beloved husband and best friend of 56 years, Dr. Donald H. Gucker; three loving children, Judith A. Contursi of Flemington, NJ, Jeffrey D. Gucker of Evergreen, CO, and Christopher M. Gucker of Hillsborough, NJ; and five cherished granddaughters, Erika, Shannon, Samantha, Remi, and Sydney. Dorothy was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Shook; and her mother, Hazel (Shook) Rutt; and her brother, Elvin Shook. Dorothy was born in Upper Darby, PA and graduated from Washington High School, class of 1957. She earned her nursing degree from Temple University in 1960 and moved to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC with her husband before relocating to Bridgewater, NJ. She raised her family in Bridgewater, NJ, living there for 40 years before moving to Lakewood Ranch, FL. Dorothy took great pride in being a 40 year participant in the Nurses' Health Study which helps assess risk factors for cancer and cardiovascular disease. She had a passion for photography and was a member of the Lakewood Ranch Photography Club. Dorothy's strength, courage and loving heart graced her family and many friends throughout her life. Services will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11am at Palms-Robarts Funeral Home; 170 Honore Ave in Sarasota. Also a service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 11am at the Bridgewater United Methodist Church, 651 Country Club Road in Bridgewater, NJ. Donations may be made in memory of Dorothy to the Cancer Research Institute; www.cancerresearch.org.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss Don ... we have been away for a few months and I had no idea that she was so ill. I didnt know Dot long, or well - but that little "taste" was enough to know what a lovely person she was. Not a negative person although she could have been with her health problems. She smiled a lot - I really liked her! I recall we had a funny conversation about her name when we first met. Please pass my condolences on to your children too, she was very proud of them.
