Dorothy Louise Redfern died Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the age of 88. She was born September 1, 1929 in Winston Salem, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Craig Redfern and Dorothy Faucette Redfern.
Early on, Dorothy recognized her passion for helping others and focused her education on Public Health. She graduated from RJ Reynolds High School in 1946 and went on to earn several college degrees. Her college career began with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Salem College. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree at Columbia University in New York City and completed her Registered Nursing Degree at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Dorothy continued her education at the University of North Carolina and earned a Master of Science in Health Policy (MSHP) in 1958. She completed her education in 1968 at the University of California, earning her Master of Science in Nursing and a Post Master Certificate.
Dorothy's career spanned 21 years working for the Department of Health and Human Services. She was instrumental in developing free clinics benefiting women and children. During her career, she received numerous Public Health awards.
She was a member of the Sorosis Society, the first Professional Women's Organization in the United States. In addition, she was a member of the Guiding Staff of the Museum of Early Decorative Arts, a division of Old Salem Museums and Gardens.
Dorothy loved research, data collection, and analysis of public health issues and often spoke on these topics. She had many passions, among them traveling, entertaining, and animals. She was an active member of the Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Lewisville. She loved to sing and had a beautiful soprano voice. According to her family and friends, she was an accomplished lady who will be missed by those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by 3 nieces, Anne Purpura of Parrish, Florida, Kathy Lindsay of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Susan White of White Bluff, Tennessee. The Family would like to thank Lavinia Evans and Karen Carter who loved Dorothy and assisted in her care during the last years of her life.
