It is with heavy hearts the family announces the unexpected but peaceful passing of Dorothy Margaret (Heenan) Alexander, formerly of Fredericton, in Halifax on October 15, 2013.
Dorothy was born in Fredericton Junction to the late Albert and Agnes Heenan in 1920. Dorothy grew into a lively active young woman, a member of several athletic teams, and a good student. She loved to dance and played a mean rag-time piano.
She married Charles Mott Alexander after WWII and they had three children. Theirs was a home of cheerfulness and harmony, good food and Irish music. She was famous among friends and family for her pies, squares, and especially for the double layer chocolate birthday cake with boiled icing. They lived in several New Brunswick towns, including Minto, St Andrews and Fredericton and they were blessed with the ability to make good and lasting friends wherever they went. When Charles (Chick) became ill she nursed him for several years with cheerfulness and enjoyed their time together.
Dorothy was a woman with strong opinions, a feisty spirit and a big heart. To her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren she was supportive and loving through sadness and triumphs. In turn they sustained her through her medical challenges and the lonely years after Charles' death in 1988.
Left to mourn are her children: Diane Ashworth, Barry (Sharon) Alexander and Brian Alexander; her much loved grandchildren: Elizabeth, Daniel and Graham Ashworth; Joanne (Eddy) Fowler, Ryan and Michael Alexander; Megan, Amanda and John (Alexa) Alexander; and her precious great- grandchildren: Kayleigh, Katrina, Olivia and Charles; her dear sister Kay, nieces Mary, Heather and Anna-Marie and nephews Lee and William (Bill) and close friends. She was predeceased by her husband Charles, her brother Francis, sisters Isabel and Rosie and dear nephew Frederick.
The family would like to thank the nurses, caregivers and staff of Evan Hall, Cameron Hall and Parkland Estates for their love and support over the past five years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made if desired to The Heart and Stroke fund, the Parkinson's Society, or any charity of your choice.
The Funeral Mass will be in St Columba's Roman Catholic Church, Fredericton Junction, NB at 11 am Saturday, October 19, with reception to follow.
