Dorothy Luella Herness, 91, of Olympia, Washington, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2014. Born September 9, 1922 in Yelm, Washington, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Daisy Fristoe.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Robert Carl Herness; two sons, Robert K. Herness (Barbara) of Banning, CA, and R. Gary Herness (Cathy) of Olympia; a sister, Charlotte Miller (Don) of Yelm; brother, Robert Fristoe, Olympia; eight grandchildren, Kateri Neal, Stephanie Schilter, Dominic Herness, Ann Marie Herness, Shannon Herness, Anthony Herness, Megan Herness and Joel Herness; and twenty great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was a much loved pillar of the community. She married her high school sweetheart on June 27, 1942. She was an outstanding pioneer for women who cared for her children, and also served her community by working in the Thurston County Treasurer's Office, The Daily Olympian, the Teachers Credit Union (now Twin Star Credit Union) and was one of the top sales persons locally for many years for Swanson Realty. She pioneered Faculty Wives in the North Thurston School District to support education locally and also volunteered in the St. Peter's hospital guilds. Truly, she was a citizen, patriot, and loving member of the "Greatest Generation". She loved to entertain friends and family; she enjoyed playing bridge and she and her husband traveled the world on many adventures. For many years they were snow birds to their house in Palm Springs, California, where they enjoyed entertaining friends, golfing and playing bridge. She was the heart of her family and will be missed immensely.

Memorial services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, June 13, 2014, at Mills and Mills Funeral Home on Littlerock Road in Tumwater. A Celebration of her life for friends and family will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2014, at the Olympia Country Club.

Arrangements under the direction of Mills & Mills Funeral Home and Memorial Park, Tumwater, WA.
