Dorothy Kathryn Weeks Howell passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20 at Hospice of Wake County.

Dot was born to Almond and Bessie Weeks of Rocky Mount on February 21, 1920. She lived her early years in Rocky Mount where she graduated from high school. She went on to Pineland College of Salemburg and then graduated from East Carolina University (ECTC). With a special interest in young people, Dot chose teaching as a career. She was a well-respected and loved English teacher at both Daniels and Martin Junior High Schools in Raleigh. As a dedicated educator, she became active in Delta Kappa Gamma.

At Pineland Dot met the love of her life, Ezra Howell of Mocksville, whom she married in 1944. Ezra (known to many as Zeke) was in the Army and was stationed in Rehobeth Beach where they made their home until eventually moving to Raleigh. Ezra graduated from North Carolina State University and taught in what was then called Agricultural Engineering until his retirement. NC State became a focal point for Dot and Ezra as they became avid fans of academics as well as athletics. As Ezra kept statistics for basketball games, Dot followed along and sat in the stands cheering on the Pack. When their son decided to go to graduate school at State, of course they were delighted.

In their younger years, Dot and Ezra were active in West Raleigh Presbyterian Church. Dot continued her service to the community by participating in Meals on Wheels and by volunteering for many, many years at Rex Hospital. Dot is especially remembered for her love of animals, for baking the most delicious extra-thin and crispy sugar cookies and for loving the color pink.

Preceding Mrs. Howell in death were her beloved son Donald and her husband Ezra.

Surviving her is a family who will miss her very much: Katie and Robert Morgan of Buies Creek; Bobby and Lacye Owen of Roseboro; Margaret and Edward Holmes, Grace and Robert of Chapel Hill; Mary Morgan and Elizabeth Reeves of Raleigh; Debbie Cortner of Raleigh; Bob Howell of Cincinatti; Dottie DuBose-Blum of Raleigh; Rupert and Valerie Tart of Angier; Betty and John Aldridge; Mike Bradley of Raleigh; Tim Bradley of Raleigh; Sylvia and Bobby Sutter of Bath; Sue and Lee Phillips of Morrisville; Lou and Darnell Batton of Louisburg; Woodrow Howell, Carol and David Ambrose, Stewart and LaVada Howell, Charlie and Sandi Howell, Matt and Stephanie Howell, Jordan Howell of Mocksville; Rachel Howell of Wilmington; Benson and Kay Pair of Houston; Ruby Pair of Georgetown, TX; Wanda Pair of France; Florence and Lance Finnigan of Brevard; Sharon and John Byrd of Davidson; Samara and Joe Childers of Walnut Cove.

Dot was always appreciative of the resident support staff at Glenaire and had a special place in her heart for her caregivers: Tobi Agboke, Odunayo Adediran and Rita Udjoh. Also, the family wishes to thank the caring staff at Hospice.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Montlawn Memorial Park, Officiating will be Rev. Lori Pistor from West Raleigh Presbyterian Church and Rev. Betty Connette from Western Boulevard Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be given to a charity of choice or by simply showing a kindness to someone else.

"Dear Dot's family. I had the pleasure of knowing and working (and playing) with Dot as she volunteered at Rex. She was a doll. Knowing her, certainly..." Betty Greer (Greenville, NC)
