Dorothy Barbara Jarvis of Bloomington, Indiana was born in Chicago, Illinois, March 27, 1926 to Chester Nowak and Josephine Bednarek Nowak. She passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. Dorothy grew up in Chicago, graduated from Steinmetz High School and attended DePaul University. Dorothy earned her degree in communications from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Dorothy Barbara Jarvis of Bloomington, Indiana was born in Chicago, Illinois, March 27, 1926 to Chester Nowak and Josephine Bednarek Nowak. She passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 13, 2014.
Dorothy grew up in Chicago, graduated from Steinmetz High School and attended DePaul University. Dorothy earned her degree in communications from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Dorothy pursued additional course work in radio and TV, including a Children's Television Network seminar at Harvard University. Dorothy had a beautiful singing voice and a wicked sense of humor. Upon meeting the Palm sisters, who became her best high school friends, she told them her family were artists and theatre people and that she was born in a trunk.
Dorothy was an entrepreneur who wrote for and published Ye Olde Villager in Wheaton, Illinois in the 1960's. Dorothy also mentored a children's theatre group in Winfield IL. Bloomington residents will remember Dorothy as being the gracious owner and chef of the Wine Cellar restaurant, located on the square in downtown Bloomington during the 1980's.
Dorothy is predeceased by her parents and one granddaughter, Heather Johnsen Sanders (Tom) of Muncie IN. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Arlen Brown of Bloomington IN, and a sister, Sharon Novak of Indian Head Park Il. Dorothy is also survived by her nine children; Deborah Holliday (Bob) of Corpus Christi TX, Lowell Jarvis (Debra) of New Castle CA, Paul Jarvis (Jayne) of Sacramento CA, Neil Jarvis (Theresa) of Mooresville IN, James Jarvis (Lara) of Carbondale IL, Christine Feaster (Bill) of Mooresville IN, Stacy Jarvis of Sacramento CA, Gregory Jarvis of Bloomington IN, and Alexander Jarvis (Danielle Urschel) of Bloomington IN; six grandchildren - Erik Johnsen (Dawn) of Summitville IN, Andrew Jarvis of Sacramento CA, Rory Jarvis of New Castle CA, Izabella Jarvis of Bloomington IN, Marcellus Jarvis of Bloomington IN, and James Richard (JR) Jarvis of Carbondale IL; and one great-grandson, Kevin Johnsen of Summitville IN.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 17, 4 - 8 p.m., at Day & Deremiah-Frye Funeral Home, 4150 E 3rd St, Bloomington. A mass will be celebrated on Monday, August 18, 11 a.m., at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1413 E 17th St.
