Dorothy Helen Lurensky, formerly of Lynn, died September 13, 2013 at the age of 89. She was the devoted wife of the late Maurice Lurensky for 65 years. She was the mother of Barbara Kessel and husband Herbert of Shelburne, VT; Judy Davids and husband Glenn of Swampscott; Amy Dines and husband David of Beverly; Diane Alpern and husband David of Northampton and Mark Lurensky of Brookline. She was a loving grandmother of 9, great grandmother of 3, and sister of Selma Sobell of Needham and Evelyn Press of Tel Aviv.
She graduated from Boston State College in 1945 with a major in Education and in 1946 she obtained her Masters degree in Spanish at Boston University.
Dottie and Maurie moved to Lynn in 1952 to a home by the ocean. In addition to raising 5 children, Dottie loved international travel, swimming at the Jewish Community Center, and her Garden Club, Couples Club and bridge group activities. She was warm and gregarious, easily making friends wherever she went. She liked entertaining people with good jokes. She and Maurie spent their last few decades "snowbirding" in Pompano Beach, Florida where they were part of an active and vibrant community.
She worked as a substitute teacher in Lynn and taught Spanish at Salem State College. In her later years, she served as a Spanish tour guide around Boston and Salem. She enjoyed musicals, regularly ushering at the North Shore Music Theatre. Her love of learning never left her as she pursued Elder Hostels in her later years and learned to play piano. Her generous and caring nature made her a beloved friend of many. She will be greatly missed.
