Obituary

Dorothy Darling Powel Dorothy, better known as Penny or GG, made a date with her Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2014 after 98 years of life. Penny's zest for life through thick and thin was simply amazing. She enjoyed all the details of God's provisions. Rochester, MN, Mason City, IA, Pikeville, KY, Alton, IL, Clearwater, FL and Ft. Myers, FL were all homes with good memories. Her last 11 years were in Tallahassee, FL at Westminster Oaks, near family. Dorothy Darling Powel

Dorothy, better known as Penny or GG, made a date with her Lord on Sunday, February 2, 2014 after 98 years of life.
While there, she loved the variety of activities easily available, volunteered as much as possible, and made many dear friends. Penny and her family were most appreciative for the wonderful attention she received while at Westminster Oaks.
Born on a dairy farm near Rochester, MN to Frederick and Jessie Hack Pennington on January 17, 1916, she was the 5th of 8 children...Milo, Bernice, Ralph, Donald, Dorothy, Stanley, Rosemary and David, all of whom are deceased. She remained close to many of their surviving spouses and children. Sewing by age 10 she helped to clothe her family and also started the 1st 4-H Club in Olmsted County, MN. A love for all things outdoors was evident throughout her days…always wanting to grow something and becoming an enthusiastic bird watcher.
Graduating from Rochester Jr. College and attending the University of Minnesota brought her to work as a medical secretary at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. While working there she met and married in 1940 Dr. John Darling, surgeon and pathologist, father of Ann and Cynthia. Through the years Penny was very active in teaching Sunday School, working as a hospital volunteer, leading Scouts, playing golf and participating in P.E.O., an international group of women who support other women in their educational endeavors.
Penny was predeceased by John Darling and by Hugh Powel, whom she married in 1969. Surviving daughters are Ann D. Williams (Lee) of Tallahassee, FL and Cynthia Cohlmeyer (Stephen) of Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Her dearly loved grandchildren and their spouses are Leonard Lee "Chip" Williams, III (Kristen) of Tallahassee, FL., Daniel Cohlmeyer (Catherine) of Montreal, QC, Canada and Laura Whittington (Richard) of Denver, CO. GG's great grandchildren are Meyer and Holden Williams, Jules and Paige Cohlmeyer and Avery Whittington. Being with these young ones and enjoying them through pictures, Skype and FaceTime were always good times.
Celebration of Life Services will be on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Westminster Oaks Maguire Center at 2 PM. Guests are invited to visit and have refreshments immediately following the services.
