Dorothy "Dot" Simpson Hutchens Sellinger of Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, VA died June 10, 2014. A native of Marshville, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Kate and Clyde Simpson.
Dorothy lived in Newport News, VA for several years. As a young woman, she began a career with the Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., which included being sent to study computer programming at the IBM school in Endicott, NY.
Dorothy was a champion golfer, winning numerous tournaments to include: multiple years as the women's champion of James River Country Club, Peninsula Club Champion, and being the first woman golf champion of Williamsburg Country Club. She had many memorable experiences with golf and savored a multitude of colorful moments such as playing a match against Mrs. Sam Snead in the Ladies' Virginia State Amateur in Hot Springs, VA, and playing in the invitational North-South Championship in Pinehurst, NC. Dorothy served as President of the Virginia State Ladies' Golf Association and enjoyed many lasting friendships from her travels throughout the Commonwealth serving and participating in this competitive sport.
Dorothy was dedicated to community service through years of volunteering at the Veteran's Hospital, Hampton, VA and Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg, VA, where she used her Red Cross certification to devote time helping those in need.
The family home and garden were always special interests of creative expression for Dorothy, culminating in the family home in Newport News being on the historic Virginia State Garden Tour in 1979. Dorothy was always sharing her joy, for example, having flowers delivered on the day of the garden tour to the dorm room of her daughter, Pamela, then a student at Duke University.
A student of the stock market for decades, Dorothy began most days with a watchful eye on the opening of the market and concluded as many with the closing bell.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, her brothers and sisters, and her husbands, W.L. "Bud" Hutchens, II, Peter Nitterhouse, Ret. Admiral Jake Fyfe, and Frank Sellinger.
A devoted, generous, and inspirational, mom and "Granny/Gran Gran," Dorothy is survived by her only child, The Honorable Pamela E. Hutchens of Virginia Beach, VA; as well as her grandchildren who made her "proud as punch," Alexander Dylan Albert, currently attending Duke University, and Caroline Elizabeth Albert of Virginia Beach, VA. While a resident of Williamsburg, Dorothy always cherished her visits to her condo in Virginia Beach to share special times with her grandchildren and enjoy the oceanfront. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy approached all interests and aspects of life with vivacious optimism and grateful enthusiasm. She was always looking for ways to lighten the load of others. She could make life's challenges and tasks seem fun with her sense of humor and creativity.
Throughout the years, she encouraged her daughter to pursue her dreams, and they shared many memorable adventures together, such as driving a Corvette across the country, during the August heat, to get Pamela to Pepperdine University School of Law, Malibu, CA, with a brief detour to Las Vegas, NV. Dorothy instilled a positive attitude in her daughter and grandchildren regarding their academic and athletic pursuits. Accordingly, the generous kindness expressed by a memorial donation may be made to Cape Henry Collegiate School, 1320 Mill Dam Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 or Hampton Roads Academy, 739 Academy Lane, Newport News, VA 23602. At Dorothy's request, services will be private.
