Douglas Douwe Dykstra – August 19, 1936 to June 19, 2017

Doug is survived by daughters Dorothy Evans (Larry) and Susan Whiting (Dan), fiancée Carolyn Morris, grandchildren; Brian DeKoekkoek, Landon Evans, Matthew Whiting, Jonathan Whiting and Christopher Whiting, sisters; Ann Tibbets (George), Polly Stanley (Roy), Janet Bakker, sister-in-law Jean and brothers; William (Sandra), Jim (Connie) and John (Laurie), many nephews and nieces. Doug is preceded in death by wife Elizabeth, his parents, Peter & Dorothy Dykstra, brother Jerry and brothers-in-law Gerrit Hazenberg and Corry Bakker. Doug was born Douwe Dijkstra in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, August 19, 1936 to Pieter and Duifke (Dorothy) Dijkstra, the eldest of eight children. In August 1956, he married Elizabeth (Elly) Draaisma and they had a daughter, Dorothy in May 1957. He studied at the Institute of Business & Trade in Leeuwarden and worked at the Christian daily newspaper, Friesch Dagblad. From 1956 to 1957 he served in the Dutch military. In 1958 he, Elly and baby Dorothy followed the rest of the family and immigrated to the United States. They settled in the Seattle area where the rest of his family was living. Daughter Susan was born in February 1959. Elly passed away in 1999. Doug worked for a time in a three man print shop owned by Dick Liepelt. In 1965, Doug and brother Jerry bought that company and incorporated as Continental Printing. In its heyday they employed nearly 100 people. As a business man, Doug was respected by all who knew him. Doug loved language and writing. Along with works of poetry and essays, he did the English translation of a book, "Dykstra: History of a Family from Friesland" in 2007 (ISBN 978-90-811743-1-2), written by his cousin Sanne Dijkstra. Doug was baptized into and married in the Gereformeerde Kerk in Holland. He was a member of Seattle First Christian Reformed Church until 1991, when he transferred his membership to University Presbyterian Church. In 2006, Doug became engaged to his long time friend, Carolyn Morris. Doug was deeply loved by his family and kept his sense of humor until the end. He will be missed until we meet again. Tot ziens. A celebration of Doug's life will be held at 2:00 pm at Shoreline Christian Reformed Church, 14555 25th Ave. N.E., Shoreline, WA 98155 on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. A private graveside service for family will be held at Floral Hills Cemetery, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, WA 98036 on Wednesday, June 28, 2017. Remembrances may be made to Bothell Senior Center or the charity of your choice. Please visit: www.floralhillslynnwood.com to leave your condolences on Doug's online guestbook.

"I called on Doug for many years at his print shop. I always enjoyed visiting with him and admired him as a businessman. Doug and I are almost the same age..." John Porter (Kirkland, WA)
