Mr. Douglas Wintfield Johnson, age 61, passed away peacefully at Golden Living Center on Fifth Street in Charlotte. Douglas, a Charlotte native was born on April 27, 1952. He was the son of the late Mr. Richard Porter and Marie Starr Johnson.

Douglas attended Dilworth Elementary, The Nevins School and graduated from Myers Park High School, class of 1970. While a student at Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, he attended the special education classes designed for those with developmental disabilities. After graduation, Douglas went to Western Carolina Center in Morganton, NC and learned life skills and practices that would help him to be independent and live on his own. His family is proud of his strong spirit of determination to make his life the most productive as possible. He was well thought of by all that knew him. A true southern gentleman, Douglas had a very outgoing personality and was always smiling. His outlook on life was very optimistic, no matter how many challenges one could face. He remained like this to his passing.

Mr. Johnson is survived by his brothers, Rev. Erik S. Johnson of Charlotte, Stuart K. Johnson (Sally) of Yorktown, VA and Greg M. Johnson of Newport News, VA. Also surviving are his six nephews, five nieces and numerous cousins, all of whom he adored.

A memorial celebration of his life will be Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the chapel at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home with the Reverend Erik S. Johnson officiating. A visitation with reception will be held following the service.

The Johnson family wishes to thank all the numerous doctors and in home health care providers who have assisted Douglas during his later years. The family also wishes to thank Barbara Kaye, RN and the Personal Touch Care Team and the Golden Living Center on Fifth for their kindness and gentleness to Douglas in his last days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the charity of your choice.

"Doug was a very dear, special, treasured friend and client. I enjoyed all of our, "first of the month, birthday and holiday lunch dates and hair..." Sherry Gibson (Charlotte, NC)
