William C. Acker Dr. William (Bill) Acker died peacefully in his home on Friday September 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. He was born in Halifax in 1941 to Eleanor and Thomas Acker. A dedicated husband, father, friend and physician, he will be sadly missed. He lived his life with dignity and respect. He was a true gentleman; kind, caring, devoted and professional. Dr. William (Bill) Acker died peacefully in his home on Friday September 13, 2013 after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. He was born in Halifax in 1941 to Eleanor and Thomas Acker. A dedicated husband, father, friend and physician, he will be sadly missed. He lived his life with dignity and respect. He was a true gentleman; kind, caring, devoted and professional. He graduated from Dalhousie Medical School in 1968 and was a general practioner for nearly 40 years, starting his career in Pictou where he worked for 2 years, and continuing on Spring Garden Road for 38 years, 35 years of those in practice with Dr. Graeme Bethune. He touched the lives of many patients and families and brought many babies safely into the world. His accomplishments in patient care were extensive, but his career was also enriched with significant administrative and leadership roles provincially and nationally, including sitting as President of the Nova Scotia Medical Society in 1986, being Chairman of the Canadian Medical Association Political Action Committee from 1993-1995, many roles on various committees within the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia, including role of President in 1998 and taking role as President of the Dalhousie Medical Alumni Association also in 1998-2002. He is survived by loving wife of 46 years, Penny Acker (Silver) of Halifax, brother Thomas Acker of Truro and 4 children; Stephanie Acker, Jennifer Rose (Trevor), Bryan Acker (Nicola), Amy Acker (Michael Ianni), eight grandchildren (Jayden, Camryn, Avery, Ella, Colin, Leah, Cillian and Noah) and grandpuppy, Chichi. Also survived by in-laws; Peter and Wynn Foy, brother and sisters in-law; Carol and Chuck Piper, David and Pam Silver, Janet Bell and Judy Foy and nieces and nephew. Family would like to give special thanks to the VON, RJF and Palliative Care for their support and care. Arrangements are under the care of Snows Funeral Home (Lacewood Drive), where the visitation will be Tuesday, September 17, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with service and celebration of his life and accomplishments on Wednesday September 18 at 2 pm at Rockingham United Church with Rev. Debbie Aitken officiating and a reception after the service in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, a donation could be made to charity of your choice.
