Dr. William Somers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2012.

William Hill Somers, M. D.

Bill Somers, 90, passed to be with the Lord on November 28, 2012 in Houston, Texas.

On October 19, 1922, Bill was born in Bronxville, N.Y. His family moved to Salisbury, Connecticut in the early 1930's which he considered his hometown. He graduated from Taff Preparatory School and entered the University of Michigan in 1941. His education was interrupted by naval service during World War II. After graduating from Columbia University Midshipman School, he served in the Pacific Theater for two years as skipper of a Landing Craft Tank. He was a LT. Jr. in the USSN. He considered it a duty and a privilege to serve his county.

After graduation from the University of Michigan, he received his M.D. degree from New York Medical College. His internship and radiology residency were at the Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Somers was board certified in Radiology at the old Macon Hospital in January 1955. He was responsible for the first Nuclear Medicine and Cobalt Radiation Unit in central Georgia in 1956. For many years, he served as chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. He retired in 1982 to enjoy golf, travel, reading, family and friends.

His medical memberships include: President and Chair of the Board of Radiology Association of Macon, President of Georgia Radiological Society, Diplomat of the American Board of Radiology, American College of Radiology, Bibb County Medical Society of Georgia, American Medical Association, and Radiological Society of North America. He was founder of the Radiology Associated of Macon, P.C. and a past president of the Georgia Radiological Society.

His civic memberships and honors include: Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, two term Director of Rotary, first Rotarian trustee for the George and Ann Hatcher Foundation, and emeritus trustee of the Medcen Community Health Foundation.

He never met a stranger he didn't like and charmed all with his quick wit and loyal nature. He often enjoyed golfing (hole-in-one club), sailing with his sister's family, traveling the world, reading, and football-especially the Macon Touchdown Club.

He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past deacon, loving husband, dedicated father, and fun loving friend to many.

Survivors include his dearly beloved wife, Shirley, of sixty-one years; daughter Margaret of Houston, Texas her three children, Robby, Diane, and Craig Barron; daughter Carolyn Piscacek of Pasadena, Texas; niece Dana Anderson of Greenville, South Carolina; great-grandsons Robert K. Barron, Collin Barron, and William Barron; great-grand daughters Morgan Somers Barron, Nola Carter, and Miko Barron.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Haggai Institute, PO Box 13, Atlanta, Georgia 30370, http://haggai-institute.com/donate-now, or Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77024.
