Elizabeth Biart (Betty) Avery , life-long cultivator of people, gardens and parks, died at home July 29 with the quiet dignity with which she lived.  She was 91.   Betty was born to Nathaniel Paul and Mabel (Nilson) Biart, January 6, 1921 in Madison Wisconsin.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1942 with a BA in sociology and comparative literature. She married Robert L. Avery in 1943.  He preceded her in death in 1977.   She served more than 20 years on the Clark County Parks Board.  In 1979 she was appointed by Governor Dixie Lee Ray to a 3-year term on the Washington State...

Betty was born to Nathaniel Paul and Mabel (Nilson) Biart, January 6, 1921 in Madison Wisconsin.  She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1942 with a BA in sociology and comparative literature. She married Robert L. Avery in 1943.  He preceded her in death in 1977.



 



She served more than 20 years on the Clark County Parks Board.  In 1979 she was appointed by Governor Dixie Lee Ray to a 3-year term on the Washington State Interagency Commission for Outdoor Recreation.  In 2002 she and Robert (posthumously) received the Silva Bolds Whitfield Award from the Vancouver Urban Forestry Commission.  She was a founding member of the Evergreen Arboretum Committee, a Grant House gardener, and a member of many election boards.



 



Betty was a devoted wife and mother, a beloved friend and neighbor.  She is survived by five daughters, Susan, Ann, Elin, Martha and Julie; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.



 



In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Columbia Land Trust or a charitable organization of your choosing.



 



A celebration of life will be held Friday August 17 at 2 p.m. at the Marshall House, 1301 Officers Row.



 



A private memorial service was held for the family
