Ebernezer Martin Adams, 69, traded his earthly body for his Heavenly one on Monday, December 9, 2013. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, December 12, 2013 at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, at the intersection of Leesville and Olive Branch Roads in Durham. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and share lunch prior to the service, from 11:00 – 1:00 in the fellowship hall.

A native of Morrisville, NC, he was the son of the late Darcus Hannibal and Thora King Adams. After graduating from Cary High School in 1962, Sam worked for the Airport Authority, served in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War, and earned two Business degrees from Piedmont Tech. He was employed by General Telephone, now Verizon, for more than 30 years, retiring in 1998.

Sam lived in the Morrisville area most of his life and valued time spent with family, celebrating life's events and sharing his unique recipes at family gatherings. An avid outdoorsman, he always looked forward to the opening of deer season and the camaraderie of fellow sportsmen. He enjoyed daily swims at Cary's Rex Wellness Center and often joked about training for the Senior Olympics. He was a life-long member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, serving as Deacon, teacher, and choir member. After relocating in New Hill, he attended New Hill Baptist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir and helping others.

Sam is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathryn Matthews Adams; daughters, Rebekah (Joey) Ayers of Hurdle Mills and Kathryn (David) Parker of Sanford; son, Robert Martin Adams of Chapel Hill; grandson, Dylan Taylor Ayers; sisters, Ruth A. Sauls of Clayton and Nannie (Mitchell) Williams of Raleigh; brother, Darcus H. (Linda) Adams, Jr. of Apex; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He will be missed by family and friends, but perhaps most by Charlotte, his English bulldog. He was preceded in death by brothers, Durwood H. Adams of Durham and Floyd E. Adams of Kerr Lake; sisters, Dorothy A. Richardson and Clarice A. Burkham of Clearwater, SC.

We wish to thank the compassionate medical staff of UNC Hospitals, especially those in Hepatology and Liver Transplant, who were instrumental in adding priceless years to his life, then caring for him as it slipped away. The Adams family requests donations be made in Sam's memory to the Jason Kendall Ray Foundation, PO Box 6326, Concord, NC, 28027 (jasonray.org) to raise awareness and funding for organ transplants.
